NICE AND EASY: Which DISH receivers need the Hybrid LNB?

The biggest change in DISH’s technology happened with the rollout of the Hopper 3 several years ago. DISH rolled out a new LNB series called “Hybrid” to make it easy for the 16-tuner Hopper 3 to get what it needs. Traditionally DISH technology used one wire per recording tuner, and that tech was flexible enough to handle the 5 tuners required by the older Hopper DVRs. However, the need for 16 tuners in 1 box changed everything. Hybrid LNBs take care of the problem and also make it easier for Hopper to distribute programming to the Joeys. Hybrid LNBs are a little different in the way they work, but different isn’t necessarily bad.

Making this simple

The only DISH product that flat out completely needs the Hybrid system is the Hopper 3. The other two current products from DISH, the Hopper Duo and Wally, will work on a non-Hybrid system. However, if you’re able to do it you should definitely use a Hybrid system.

Wiring with the Hybrid system is much easier and in most cases it’s cheaper too. It’s easier to add a Joey to the system if you’re using a Hopper Duo. When you’re talking about Wallys, the hybrid system makes it super easy. Rather than running multiple multiswitches like you would in an older system, you can just use these splitters. Installation is very simple. Here’s a typical install showing 12 Wallys hooked up to one line off the dish. If you need to expand more than this, it’s possible but it takes different equipment.

When you compare that to the old way of getting multiple receivers it’s hard to know why anyone wouldn’t do it that way.
