Hi, there! I recently purchased an Onkyo HT-R340 A/V receiver, then created a home theater system with an Onkyo DVD player and other components. However, I haven't managed to figure out how to program the remote of the A/V receiver so as to be able to control the functions of my DVD player through it. I would surely appreciate some advice in this respect.

Welcome! I don't own either so I'm not a good source for you, but some suggestions. Actually I'm surprised your receiver's remote doesn't default to Onkyo codes for the other equipment it controls. I assume you have to select a DVD button or such on the remote then press the relate keys, play, stop, etc. Or else the instructions will usually include codes you can program in for each function to match the brand you're trying to control. Failing all else you can get a high(er) model universal remote...

Sorry, can't suggest anything else...

Thank you for the message

Thank you for the reply, bhelms. Unfortunately, the instructions that came with the Onkyo receiver and DVD player do not contain any reference to codes I could resort to. I'm just a regular user, no tech specialist, so I didn't even know I was supposed to use some codes to program the receiver's remote. I also believe it's a pity that the manual is not comprehensive enough, given the high quality of the Onkyo products. I still hope I will find somebody who has been through the same experience, before buying the universal remote. Again, thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate your support.

Why not call or e-mail Onkyo tech support? Can't hurt anything and the price is right!

I found a souce for the manual for your receiver on line and tried to D/L it, but apparently I need to upgrade my FlashPlayer and our IT dept. frowns on that sort of thing. I'll give it another try...

I have run into situations in the past where newer equipment isn't recognized by an older remote. A good example is a Denon HTIB that was added to a bedroom system with an older DISH 508. The 508 remote wouldn't recognize the Denon codes.

However, a little research found that a remote for a 522/625 did have the correct codes and I was able to buy the remote off eBay for $5.

You might be in the same situation, in which case the remote for a newer Onkyo may be the ticket. Or you could just buy a Harmony :)
