Analyst company IHS has published a report outlining the state of the small and medium display market throughout 2015. The document states that while revenue in the sector only grew by 4% year-over-year, there was a major shift in powers. The need for small, high-resolution displays have caused many manufacturers to switch to AMOLED, resulting in a 54% year-over-year growth for AMOLED panels. LTPS (low-temperature polysilicon) TFT LCD displays have also marked a 10% growth, while a-Si (amorphous silicon) TFT LCD panels are down 10%.

The leader in shipments of display panels of 9 inches and less is Samsung Display, with 23% of all revenue. Japan Display comes second with 16%, followed by LG Display with 13%, and Sharp with 10%.

Of course, a large part of Samsung Display's victory run can be atributed to the success of Sammy's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge smartphones. It is also said that large China-based manufacturers are turning to Samsung's AMOLED panels, since they've been famous for their quality and colors. This is a major shift in gears when compared to two years ago, when Samsung Display reported that it's having trouble selling its panels to manufacturers other than Sammy. If the report about Apple ordering 100 million 5.5-inch AMOLED panelsfrom Samsung turns out to be true, Samsung Display may easily rise to absolutely dominate the smartphone screen market in the next few years.
