searching for satellite signal ....(771) ??

    We had a nasty storm with winds of 60-70 mph roll through the area yesterday. Now today when (for the first time since the storm) i go to turn on my receivers i get searching for satellite signal (771). Does this mean the dish was moved by the strong winds or is it something else? How much will DirecTV charge me for someone to come out and fix it (I know nothing about dishes and my dad doesn't get off work til dark)?

    THe dish must be move, call your local dealer for service, if call DTV, they charge you anyway as much as the local dealer charge you.

    If you have a dual lnb dish now, than it is cheaper to have them upgrade you to a 3lnb dish as it will only cost you 50 bucks shipped and installed, then you get a extra dish, and an alignment to boot, all for 50 bucks. If you already have a 3 lnb, you might wanna try thumbing (gently) the dish to one side or the other (or up and down) while someone watches the receivers signal meters on 101 (remember to wait 5-8 seconds before expecting to see a signal on the receivers meter after each thumbed adjustment as there is a delay in how long it takes the reciever to lock into a signal), you might be able to realign it yourself (don't touch the skew!).

    it came back on this afternoon. I'll keep an eye on it. If I have to I'll get the ladder out and mess with it tomorrow.

    What is it you have?, a dual or triple lnb? do you have a external multiswitch (i.e. not the one built into the 3 lnb)?

    Could be water getting in somewhere.

    Might wanna make sure the connectors are all secure, and are weather protected with rubber boots, if you have an exposed ground block (or external exposed multiswitch with the dual lnb (or an extra cascadable multiswitxch with 3lnb)), is there a drip loop so when it rains the water will run _away_ from the connectors? Also check the coax themselves for damage, or kinks, or punctures, and corrosion on any connector, also disconnect and inspect all connectors for corrosion or short/bent center wires, or bad crimps (if they are the crimp type(yuk)). Make sure you unplug ALL receivers from the power before doing any work on the coax, if you don't you can fry an LNB.
