You can use this site to find the azimuth and elevation. Use Echostar 3 at 61.5 as the satellite. Satellite Elevation and Azimuth Position Calculator

Montana is fringe to deep fringe for 61W. You will most likely need a larger dish to receive 61W.

Your best bet is to find someone close to your location pointing to 61W and get real-life advise on what will be needed to receive 61W reliably.

If I were to take a stab at it, I'd have to advise you get a 24" wing dish for 61W from Montana.

Edit: Looks like you were able to bring in 61W with your 18". Good deal... http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-network-technical-discussions/121130-dish-61-5-a.html

As long as you have line of site it will work. I was able to see it with a steady tp strength of 65 using a dish 500 before I made the mistake of repointing to 129 when it was mirrored. In the time since then nearby evergreens blocked my path so I couldn't go back to it.

Use the calculator at Satelliteguys, here's the link :

Satellite Angle Calculator - SatelliteGuys.US

That graphic previously posted as I know for a fact it works fine in California, Oregon, etc. The look angles are very low but if you can get line of sight you'll be good to go.

What have you done to get the signal? When hunting for a wing bird I like to unhook everything. No switches. Do a check switch to clear out the matrix. Hook up just the one 18 inch dish straight to the receiver with no switches. Then start hunting. Make sure you pick an active transponder too!

It'd go so much easier if you had a signal meter so if you can get to a radio shack they sell a cheap inline meter. When I did my install work in Detroit we had customers who could only see the 148 sat for the foreign programming so a local subcontractor specialized in custom tuning in the 148 from second floor apartments by lowering the wall mounted masts about 5 degrea's and setting the elevation at its lowest point to get the signal in. Im not sure what your line of site is like but if theres any hills/mountains/tree's/bears between your dish and the sat then this will be a problem specialy if your in a north/south valley.

If you can find a decent installer in your area you might wind up saving yourself time and frustration going that route instead of doing it yourself.

As I recall my dish was pointed just south of due east and looked like it was aimed into a gap in the Cascades from the top of my 2 story chimney. A few inches either side or less height on the mount and I'd have been out of luck. I also suspect it would have been more difficult to aim that low on the horizon with a bigger dish.

*snickers* I love the 61.5.

Customer: "Why's it pointing into the ground?"

I live in Bozeman and can pick it up fine. The hardest part is a clear LoS.
