The TV agreements for 2008 Atlanta Braves have been in flux due to the change from TBS superstation to Peachtree TV.

DirecTV has given us the following update. It is important to note that it is not a final agreement yet, but they are very close and confident that everything is resolved (or they wouldn't have sent us this).

TBS was broadcasting Braves games on their Superstation for years. This year TBS is now PeachTree broadcasting in Atlanta, but they also holds the rights to broadcast SOME Braves games in Braves territory (the old Turner South territory) in addition to Atlanta.

We are working with PeachTree to get a deal done. I've spoken to that group today to see if it's ok to let this information out on this community and we got that approval.

Basically what will happen is Braves game in Atlanta will be on Peach Tree locally in SD. HD not sure just yet but that is also a possibility.

The old Turner South territory will have 47 games available for DIRECTV customers in that territory in SD and HD.

Furthermore, these games will also be available on MLB Extra Innings for Braves fans nationwide that are not part of the Braves territory or the Atlanta DMA.

So Braves fans should be happy campers. Again, the deal is not officially signed yet but because of the large volume of calls and emails, we are at least reactively telling Braves fans that good news is coming soon. Hopefully an official announcement soon.

My understanding is that Atlanta local market will get games on Peachtree local station (which is not final for HD yet).

Regional fans will get the games on the old Turner South station (is that now Sport South?) in HD.

Out-of-market fans will get the games in Extra Innings in HD.

Woohoo.... with our recent move to Lagrange, 17-1 was now out of reach for me and had been the sole reason I was maintaining an ota setup before the move (especially since DircTV added the MYTV HD feed to our local package. I forsee many beer filled lazy afternoons this summer.

is there any chance that maybe dish network is working on an agreement for the braves games as well?? because i am a huge braves fan and want to be able to watch the braves this year

My translation of this:

In Metro Atlanta: Channel 17 will have all 47 games in SD via DirecTV LiL; Channel 17 in HD via DirecTV LiL may be coming too.
In Braves Territory: DirecTV will carry all 47 games in SD and HD on a yet-to-be-determined channel, most likely a Sports Alternate Channel.
Outside of Braves Territory: MLB Extra Innings will have all the games in SD and SuperFan should add the HD game feeds.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad DirecTV is picking up the games, but I have Dish Network as well. Any chance they will pick them up?

As part of last year's deal (for seven seasons, I believe) those who didn't agree before last season were frozen out for the lifetime of the agreement.

It would take the approval of MLB, DirecTV, Comcast and Time Warner for Dish to get access to MLB EI.

Glad to hear this. I have a link from CSS who is carrying the 45 games on cable to a certain area of the southeast. I am thinking the blue area would apply to Direct TV as well as cables.

Comcast/Charter SouthEast Sports

What do you think?

I am just glad that I will be able too watch a few games with the old, familiar announcers. I have been listening to Skip, et all, ever since TBS started broadcasting Braves games in the '70s (I have been a Braves Fan for more than 50 years). I never had cable until TBS started broadcasting the games. I now have DirecTV and love it.

..and PeachtreeTV (aka WPCH) is owned and operated by TBS

Formally WJRJ, WTCG, and yes, WTBS

Turner Broadcasting rebranded WTBS as Peachtree TV, with new call letters, WPCH-TV. As a result of this, the nationwide version of TBS, which was blacked-out in the Atlanta market, became available to cable and satellite viewers in the market for the first time. Peachtree TV, with the notable exception of Braves Baseball, generally broadcasts lower quality and less expensive, syndicated programming.

Shame on them for using that call sign; PCH is the most recognizable as Pacific Coast Highway; ARGH!

Some side notes of interest:

# The cable TBS was mostly a simulcast of WTBS, except for TV commercials, some locally-produced public-affairs programming on Saturday mornings, and certain special events. Unlike WTBS, the national TBS is not obligated to carry public affairs or educational "E/I" programming for children, because it is a cable channel, and thus exempted from FCC broadcast requirements. The current lineup, as "Peachtree TV", is now completely separate from that of TBS. It includes a nightly movie, various sitcoms, a double run of the game show Temptation, and a one-hour simulcast of Turner-owned Headline News at 6am.

# FCC regulations often caused unusual requirements for a nationally distributed local television station. If a technical failure of the Atlanta local transmitter forced the station to go off the air locally, the national version was required to cease transmission to the satellite also, until the local problem was resolved.

# The name "Peachtree TV" is derived from Peachtree Street (Atlanta's main street), and the large number of other streets in Atlanta having "Peachtree" as part of their names in some form or other.

# The channel 17 analog transmitter is located at 1018 West Peachtree Street NW (in midtown Atlanta), with the antenna located on a large self-supporting TV tower which can be seen to the east side of the Downtown Connector. WNNX FM 99.7 ("99X") was located on this tower, and still maintains it as a full-power backup. Its sister station WWWQ FM also has a low-power backup here.

# The building at this site was once home to the TV studios of WAGA-TV and later channel 17, during the WJRJ years. Soon after being purchased by Turner, the studios were moved to the former Progressive Club site a few blocks west at 1050 Techwood Drive. The Techwood Drive studios also served as the studio facilities for WTBS' Saturday evening wrestling programs Georgia Championship Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling, as well as the original home of CNN. WPCH still uses the building to this day.

# ... WNNX FM 99.7 ("99X") was located on this tower, and still maintains it as a full-power backup. Its sister station WWWQ FM also has a low-power backup here.

99X has ceased to exist as a FM broadcast (damn you Cumulus!). WNNX is now at 100.5 (Rock 100.5) and WWWQ is now at 99.7 (Q100).

You are just going to have to do what I did last year, drop Dish Network and go with Direct TV. Direct TV has these extra innings sown up. Sorry!!

It has been posted on several boards that channel 617 will be the channel for Peachtree on Direct TV. I don't know why it is taking so long for Direct TV to make a formal announcement for the Peachtree deal. They play the first game on Peachtree next Friday.
