Verizon may bid for D*

I really could care less how they are to work for. Sorry the techs you know couldnt cut it. That would make sense though, their installs are so much more professional than D*'s

That isn't true. Verizon has some idiot techs and idiot contractors working for them.
Verzion can't make a workorder correct to save their life.

Verizon customer service (FiOS) has been top-notch, the installers completely professional, and the service has been 20-months of 100% reliability and perfection. The only problems we had were with their billing/order system, but those were corrected in a few months and everything has been fine.

I haven't been completely happy with my service. I am on my 3rd multi-room DVR. My FIOS drop apparently wasn't secure and now it's hanging so low I can jump rope with it. Call Verizon about is frustrating so I am going to wait till it falls all the way down, I going to run over it with my lawn mover and then call them again.

Yeah but every provider has their share of "idiot" techs and contractors. The guy who did my FiOS install was top notch, and said he was very happy working for them, especially doing all of the FiOS rollout stuff. I actually bumped into him a few weeks after my install at a bike race and thanked him again for how perfect the install was. I live in a house that was built in the 20's and things aren't very accessible, but this guy did a great job.

I would welcome them buying Directv. Couldn't get much worse than it is now.

So was mine. On the other hand even D* senior techs are boobs. At least the ones that have been to my place., Apparently all you need to be a D* installer is ownership of a ladder and a mirror fog test. http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-technical-discussions/143003-amusing-d-upgrade.html Their installs and fixes have been absolute CRAP. When you sign up for D* you will spend hundreds fixing their incompetence and the best results are when you do it yourself.

AT&T might not want DirecTV. I have heard some buzz that AT&T is not happy with their DirecTV deal and were doing more sales with Dish Network then they are with DirecTV.

I hear t heir sales started off great but then took a sharp nosedive and havent picked up again since.

Maybe AT&T is starting to understand that all the low hanging fruit (ie new customers) have already been picked.

Getting customers via FREE service, including all channels except porn and PPVs, including Sunday Ticket, has long-term financial implications that ATT is bright enough to see, as well. If you are having to give away your product for 5 months in order to attract customers, what does that say about your company?

Do the math assuming 100$ / month account:
5 months FREE @ 0 % = $ 0
19 months (commitment) @ 100% = $1900

Average monthly rate: $79.16

ATT may not be run by the sharpest pen in the box, but they can easily see that the revenue (and therefore profits) streams are not what they seem. Verizon, on the other hand, well, what can you say? :D

Yes I agree there are many bad techs out there for every provider. They are few and far between, but there are some really awesome techs out there and we never get the recognition that we deserve:confused:. Why is it on here that I always see tech bashing and very little praise?!?

Sometimes I forget Verizon strings fiber in the air in some areas. Our area is completely buried. As far as the DVR...I highly recommend replacing it with a TivoHD.

keep in mind... how fast does Positive spread VS negative?

people will spread negative comments quickly. This world is based on negative feedbacks... no one seems to care about positive feedbacks.

just how people say bad things about D*.. what about the good things they have done? Im listening........ no one? im still waiting??

Negative has 110% impact than Positive.

just like yesterday on a service call, i didnt hear the end of how the last tech did a crappy job installing it and blah blah.... i did their service call and now they called in and requested me to come back to do the upgrade i suggested them to do to get rid of the 18 inch dish and the D11 and D12.

its amazing how you can impact a person but it wont be spread out unless i screw up... then it will be spread.

Verizon's consumer policies and package pricing coupled with DirecTV's hardware and software would be a good combination, although I'm guessing the reduction in competition and need to service the massive debt would result in price increases.

We're really mad at DirecTV but FIOS boxes and software are well beyond awful. Did I say the FIOS DVRs and software were really crummy?

Very interesting...

I have heard rumors that Verizon was talking to Dish earlier in the year, but this is my first time hearing about them going after DirecTV.

AT&T NYNEX Errr AT&T Bell Atlantic ERRRR… Verizon is nothing but a holding company now. They do not have the resources to negotiate such a purchase let along the political capital to get it done. If anyone is going to buy DirecTV it will be AT&T. Lets face the facts AT&T built all this crap and history has a "history" of repeating itself. In my opinion even Mountain Bell ERRR Qwest and Nortel, Alcatel, Lucent Errr Western Electric Bell Labs doesn’t stand a chance.

There is a video on youtube that is from a Sat Night Live sketch where they poke fun about ther bfeakup of the Bell System and how through the last 25 years has virtually gotten back together in the form of AT&T.
Instead of it being one sytems made up of statewide or regional Bells, it's all one company. And to this day the big lie still exists. We were told we could choose our local carrier.
We cannot.
Oh, we can go with the local cable monopoly. Or we can go with one or more of the VoIP companies. But we still cannot choose our wireline local telco.
Anybody remember these?
NJ Bell, NY Telephone, New England Telephone, Southern New England TelephoneC&P Telephone, Southern Bell?

And even those companies are not totally free of the "Bell System". Most of the VOIP and cable companies buy wavelength services from AT&T for longdistance phone and internet traffic.

In my opinino the government should put AT&T totally back together again including western and regulate them to only selling wholesale and not direct to customers. Then the network would work right again.

You could have something there.

+ There would be a great savings (efficiency) from one central entity controlling the national system.

- " Good morning. I am from the phone company. Our staff has detected an unauthorized fax machine, two hand held telephones and an extra internet modem on your line. I am here to disconnect them or we will cut your wire now!"

That was only done in the past to protect the network. Since the old systems were very electromechanical equipment that did not follow specs could damage the old "Step by Step" switches. Very expensive. While I agree more could have been done to harbor competition look at how great it is now. You buy a phone a year per house and those are not cheap. Back in the monopoly days western electric leased you a phone for 1 dollar a month. figure up how much you pay today for phones. Plus look how well our national cell phone and telephone networks work :-(. Having a national system would allow for 100% coverage of Cellular traffic plus a national standard. That would drive more handset innovation since only 1 model would be needed not 3. Also think of broadband. Since 1 company would control it they would have a vested interest in getting more customers connected to high speed data lines. And I don't mean the crap 6 Mb max some of us have today im talking about large pipes up in the 50 - 100 mb range. Then I see a world where internet/tv/telephone are all offered via the internet.

Oh well I am extreamly old school

Well, I have had FIOS for about a year now and had no real problems. In fact, the HD selections get better and better. As for the equipment, I have had zero problems with any of the devices. And the multi-room DVR is pretty cool. It cannot match TiVo for storage capacity or features but it is reliable and the multi-room capabilities are very convenient. As for D* equipment being superior, I have an HR20-100 and I don't find it to be superior to the Motorola devices for FIOS. FIOS offers instant remote scheduling since the device is constantly connected to the network (unlike TiVo and D*, where you have to submit a request to the device, which may or may not be accepted in time for your show). And the D* multi-room DVR is still vaporware. D*’s only attraction for me is Sunday Ticket and hopefully if Verizon acquires them I can finally have only ONE provider.

Yes Fios is a nice setup. I just wish Verizon would not have sold most of the local footprint they owned and abandoned those customers to a lifetime of Plain old Telephone and slow DSL.
