My guess is this is just to quiet down the people upset over the Disney Dispute? I would say yes as the HD version is only on Freview.
 
What does HBO have to do with the Disney dispute?

You think that maybe it is to market HBO, and hope to get new subscribers.

It is to get people hooked on HBO's new series Boardwalk Empire by Martin Scorsese, written by a Sopranos writer and costing millions to make.... Sunday evening...
 
Exactly. I record many movies when I get the movie channels for free. I got a the external hard drive full of movies already. I do see some movies that I have been wanting to see that have been released this past year or two that will be on this weekend. They do have some good ones on.
