SatelliteGuys Review: Logitech Revue with GoogleTV – A Diamond in the Rough

I hope I get to try some of the new Google TV products at CES. Would be interested in getting rid of my Revue at the right price if the hardware and software perform better and it's better supported by the vendor (so basically not made by Logitech, pretty sure I won't have anything to worry about there...)

Google arms up for second wave of Google TV devices | Android and Me
Unless one of these new partners comes up with some mind blowing custom software for their boxes? (Which has yet to be the case with any Android based product.) It's going to still be the same GoogleTV with access to the same Android Market. It's not clear yet if an ARM-based GTV is going to be any better then our Intel-based one. All they have talked about is how it would save them some money building boxes. And lowering the price point. If the new boxes are cheaper and underpowered, then our Revue units will be just fine. (Google is taking over software support for them, BTW.)

It being underpowered is why I would replace the Revue. A more powerful device with the exact same capabilities, maybe better keyboard, and it would be worth replacing my Revue.

It's got to compete with stuff like Boxee and Roku though, $299 isn't going to fly.

The closer the GTV hardware model can get to the ubiquitous wireless phone hardware platform, the better for economies of scale and, more importantly, development expertise.

Depends on how optimistic you are or not I suppose. Not being able to get a feel for the performance difference could be because there is none (or much at all), or because they just didn't have time to tinker.

A little jaded I suppose, I'll be sure to check out Marvell's booth and find out for myself on Wednesday when I'm at CES.

Really disappointed in what I saw at the Marvell booth. They did a search while demoing the unit, and selected the first option, that 'show web and video...' and it went to a white screen for 15 seconds. I took video of it.

Done with the platform I think, won't be going out of my way in the future to stick with Google TV and will be a lot more open to replacing it. The whole overlay and not changing to another source thing is an innovation that I wish more would take advantage of, but the dissatisfaction and speed of our Revue will leave me opting for an alternative when the price and opportunity presents itsef..

I doubt it. It would make the google box a sling extender if you could. I did the very thing using an hd pro sling BOX and paired it to my 722k . I can now watch my living room tv in the bedroom suing the sling player on the google box . But there is a latency period from the time I push the dvr controls on the player till it actually gets there of about 1 -2 seconds. Also I found that if I tried to use it in the bedroom I had to have the living room tv and a/v player on . If I didn't the picture of the sling player would lose frame and I would end up watching the bottom of the screen on top, then a black bar and the top of the screen. The only way around it is to keep the living room tv and a/v receiver on at the same time and mute them so I don't hear the audio coming from the living room faster than the bedroom. All in all I think the Hopper/Joey whole house system would be better for my needs. I kind of wished I hadn't even bought the sling box now ,since I see the results aren't as good as I initially thought they would be. But my curiosity got the better of me and I had to see if it would work. It does work ,but with the above mentioned limitations.

That is strange that the tv being off causes this. Are you sending the signal thru the tv prior to the slingbox?

I am actually sending the 722k to the google box by hdmi then to the a/v receiver. The Sling box is being fed by component from the 722k. I am not feeding the tv or a/v receiver the component out of the sling box. I can't really figure out the reason why it drops the frames like that.
