I have several DVR recordings on one of my Hoppers that are no longer playable and display the error message "A problem was encountered when opening the files for this DVR event. Please not the Error Code: 04".

Any clue why this is happening?

Usually it happens if there was signal loss but I have had a few that have done it for no apparent reason. I hope they fix it soon because 722k rarely ever did that in comparison.

How would signal loss be an issue? These are recordings that worked in the past and were perfectly fine. I know we watched the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" recording at least a dozen times.

As I said, usually signal loss but sometimes no apparent reason. Wish I could tell you why it happens but I have no idea. I do know it happens a good bit more (in my experience) on Hopper than 722k.

I'm having a similar issue on one of my Hoppers but I do not receive an error code. There are a few shows I have recorded and when I watch them they play about halfway through and then abruptly stop in the middle of the recording. It will then return to the DVR menu as though the episode is over. It is like the recording is so corrupted that the Hopper thinks it has finished playing the recording. Do you think this is due to some hard drive problems and should I look at getting a replacement?

Well,I'm part of your "club".My Hopper stopped recording only PTAT,so Dish sent a replacement receiver. When I switched to Dish from Directv to get the Hopper package,I lost all of that programming on the Directv DVR.I didn't want to do that again, since we amassed quite alot on the Hopper already,so I bought an EHD,and copied off the old Hopper. When I transferred to the new Hopper,1/2 of the shows are black screens or give error 04.At first Zach from the D.I.R.T. team was helping as I was having trouble getting them to transfer, but I haven't heard from him in quite awhile. The Tech. team I called ar Dish,as well as Zach said they would take care of any fees associated with keeping the old Hopper until this was sorted out which is awesome, but their accounting team is sending me threatening emails now.I'm going to try to copy from the old Hopper to the EHD again, and deal with it at a later date.Altough I love the Hopper, and especially the Sling compared to what I had with Directv,I agree if this many people are having problems, they should have not released the Hopper yet.I waited for 3 months after I heard of the Hopper before I switched, guess I shoulda waited a year for the bugs to be worked out.BAD,BAD,service Dish! The people on the tech phonelines are clueless about the situation,I was glad when Zach started helping.Every company needs a D.I.R.T. team!!

I am glad I upgraded to the Hopper last week. And I experienced the same problem with the Error 04 after transferring shows back to the Hopper from the EHD. I didn't read the forums enough before doing the switch from my 722 and I'm paying the price now. Of over 70 episodes transferred back, 25 didn't work. I've found some available for free on either the network site or through Dishonline. The other's I've had to purchase via Itunes or other methods.
I will be calling my installer and letting them know of this issue. The installer didn't know because they didn't know how to transfer recordings from my EHD to the Hopper, I figured it out while he was at my house & showed him.
I sent a message to Dish Support as well and requested that until this issue is resolved, ALL Installers should be made aware of this issue and advise customers NOT to transfer back to the Hopper.
I did it to make it easier for us to watch episodes in order, bad idea.
