Hopper OTA USB problems

Yep MeTV shows up here too. That reminds me, I need to contact DIRT. My local ABC has a main station that for some reason is out in rural country. They "mirror" that station on another channel that is closer to urban. The "main" station has guide data and the "mirror" doesn't. All they need to Sonia "duplicate" the guide data. To make things worse, can't even record OTA channels that are missing guide data.

Mike, I brought up your experience with having the module flat before and I got shot down by several of our beta testers. Scott said that he has his module hanging down the back of his TV and all works fine. To further that, I, myself, have my module laying catty whompus behind my center speaker and all is good....

Yes I know that they shot you down ,but the DIRECTIONS that come with the tuner itself tell you explicitly to keep the module flat and horizontal . If DISH says to do this , then I think someone should follow it. Especially if that someone is having problems with the tuner itself. You need to eliminate all the variables that are causing your problems if you have black screen on your ota channels. I had problems when I first got the tuner with black screen and my tuner was hanging down the back of the shelf. I fixed it and keep it horizontal and flat and my problems with black screen went away, except for one timer that I had to delete and recreate to eliminate that one timer black screen. So all the other testers and Scott himself can poo poo the idea of following the directions ,but I will do just that. As usual your mileage may vary.

One thing that would make it easier to orient the tuner would be to use a longer A-B USB cord. That way you don't have to dangle it or do anything special to orient it "properly." I didn't know about the "requirement" to have it lay flat (who reads instructions? Just plug it in and screw on the antenna) but since I used an old 6-foot printer cable instead of the ridiculously short cable that came with it I had it lying flat and out of the way anyway. This tuner seems to be stronger than the MT2 in the 722k too. Too lazy to test out orientation, but I wonder if the new tuner is stronger due to better hardware, or simply the fact that there is only one tuner (hence twice the signal,) or both.

Scott indicated that Dish used better hardware than previous generations of tuners. More sensitive.

I think a longer cord would of been great . Then it would be easy to put the tuner where you want and it wouldn't hang just any where.

I dont see a reason to have to have the OTA Module lying flat, but any how thats how I have mine mounted. Any how, the real reason for this post is black screen again. This is getting old.

Just curious to know if anyone is using any of the other USB ports while having the OTA USB connected. I have a sling adapter and an EHD. I noticed that when I unplugged everything BUT the OTA, I haven't had a black screen issue since.

I know that I never had an EHD go to sleep until I got OTA. Now it happens on a regular basis. I blamed it on S230 but I suspected USB problems.

My EHD hasn't gone away for three straight days!
And mine has gone away 3 times in the last 48 hours. Just had to power cycle an hour ago. And FYI, a WD internal in a BlackX cradle.

The directions from DISH specifically say to leave the tuner flat and not let it hang from or it will cause problems. In trying to figure out why you are having black screen on your ota channels it makes sense to eliminate all the variables that could cause the tuner to malfunction. So #1 : follow directions that come with the tuner.

My EHD has gone away at least the last 2 days.

I had this problem at first when I got S230 software ,but haven't had a problem with it since early last week. I wonder if where you plug the tuner and hard drive into the hopper could cause any of these issues to happen. I have my sling device plugged into the usb port on the back of the receiver . So is my external hard drive. My ota tuner is plugged into the front usb port on the face of the receiver.

Well my tuner is flat and I had the balck screen again tonight which will be corrected by the nightly update. It was fine all day.

I haven't had any more black screens on my ota channels since I eliminated the one timer that was created before the S230 software update. I use my ota tuner for mostly news programs : GMA , Noon news, Evening local news, Meet the Press & This Week. I will use it more once they download software for manual timers and I can record shows on Metv again. If the black screen is happening when there is a timer involved , I suggest eliminating the timers and re-creating them. Also how are you tuning to the ota channels? Are you using the red button on the remote to see which tuners are available or is it from the guide itself or is it just timer related?

I have no timers set on OTA currently. I use the guide and it works fine during the day and sometime in the early evening I get black screens. I will try the red button. I think I may have used that already but don't remember. I'm also going to do a hard reboot which hasn't been done.
