First thread in Rabbitears

I was most pleasantly surprised by the READS ranks, which replace the evil Nielson DMAs. But how do you suppose that works w/o demographic data?

I think they mean they don't consider income or TV ownership or factors other than the population count inside the broadcast tower presumed range. Doesn't Nielsen try to assign some "quality" level to areas, indicating some are more valuable than others?

The READS ranks use census data for population in combination with actual signal levels for each area.

"Actual?" Somebody actually drives around and checks signal strength?

Just noticed you're in Alexandria. We'll have to invite you to the next NOVA SatelliteGuys charity land mine clearing event.

;)

No, I guess I should have said "projected based on Longley-Rice" which is usually pretty close. :) If I had reception data available, I did use it.

I also didn't break things along county lines like Nielsen does; it's based on census designated places. Each location is assigned to one market but that means if the eastern end of the county gets one market and the western end gets another, that's reflected, instead of lumping the whole thing into one market.

Speaking of reception data, RabbitEars is setting up this cool new thing with lets them (and you) monitor signals from various locations live.

Here is what I am currently receiving over the air at my house.

Maybe in the future we can get some other SatelliteGuys members to help monitor the airwaves like this so we can collect more data.

Thanks.

Interesting. What is involved? But since I see someone in my area is already doing it, I suppose the question is moot. Gee, I wonder who that is? ;)

Tripinva, you might want to consider updating http://www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=tvgos to reflect that TVGOS is no more. Sadly, my Sony OTA box and I both miss it.

Hey:

Will do. Thanks for the tip.

EDIT: Done. Also did the same for Sezmi.

No idea. ;) But there's nothing wrong with more than one person in an area doing it, since different locations have different reception conditions and antenna aims.

What are these signals being measured with? None of my tvs have a signal strentgh indicator.

The auto-scanner uses the SiliconDust HDHomeRun as its tuner. Software, installed on a computer near the HDHomeRun, continually scans for signals, then uploads the results to RabbitEars.
