Looking for a New Blu-ray player

My sister bought this model a few months ago. She is getting married in a few months and moving out of my parents house but she had gotten used to using the blu-ray player and Roku for streaming Netflix and Amazon off my accounts. I set this stuff up over at my parents house for their use but she was the one that fell in love with it. She wanted one device that could take care of both needs so I helped her pick one out to give the fiance for Christmas.

Every time they come visit my house he raves about how much he loves it. He has never had a blu-ray player or streaming device so he loves having this thing in their new house. I've never seen it in action myself but after a few month he has no complaints. I don't know how much is the device itself and how much is being introduced to streaming video for the first time. He says it works great with Amazon and Netflix though and it's cheap at $80.

I'm sure other people here could point out much higher end players with features this one doesn't have but I'm sure the price is higher too. I don't have a ton of experience with stand-alone players. That was just my two cents. The only one I have ever used is a Toshiba 3D player that came with a TV I bought and it was total crap. It locks up all the time, especially with streaming services. It's good enough for the occasional blu-ray rental for my parents though.

I have always used game consoles as my disk player at my house. They aren't the value they used to be anymore so I wouldn't recommend them unless you will get use out of the gaming features. I used my PS3 for years and still do for 3D playback. Now I am flip flopping between the PS4 and Xbox One. I like saying "Xbox Pause" when it's time for another beer but I hate the fact that it doesn't support bitstreaming audio. The PS4 does but it doesn't have IR for my harmony remote or voice commands for movies. I don't like using a game controller as my remote.

If ya need it now, Id get the 5100 or a newer Sony. Panny's had a little speed bump last year and I would wait to see how these new ones do. I had the 5100 and it works well.

I've bought Denon and Oppo players and haven't looked back. Denon's lower players are/were based on Panasonic electronics with Toshiba transports but Oppo is better at that price point. I know a few folks that have Sony players that work just fine at a lower price point.

Rey, I just bought the Sony that King wrote about. For 80$ you will not go wrong. Beautiful picture, and it plays SACD' s too. Every streaming service you need and 100 more I have never heard of. Wireless works flawlessly, simple set up for Netflix and Amazon prime. Quick load times, and easy to operate. Best $80 I've ever spent.

He needed dual HDMI outs, so the 790 is the logical decision. They are both very similar, so he will love it.

I'm looking for something similar in the $100 or less price range. Since it would be used mostly as a standalone USB storage playback (no NAS), my main concerns are support for multiple file types (AVI, MP4, WMV, ASF, MPG) and most importantly good navigation (smooth FF, RW modes, maybe skip forward/back, etc.) I also have some BD-RE discs loaded with MP4s so that is why I'm leaning toward a Blu-Ray player instead of just a Media playback device such as the WDTV. Is there something out there that has good playback features without breaking the bank, or should I stick with a media streaming/playback device?

I tried out a low-end Sony BX320 but it was horridly slow in loading the file list from USB and when hitting the FF button it would fast forward way too fast and choppy.
