Regardless of how you come by the hardware, the content licensing doesn't change.

The carriers are largely unmotivated to have owned equipment out in the field so there's no point in making owning somehow advantageous.

It depends on whether you have the usb ota module or the older built in Vip ota tuner . The hopper stops working so does the ota module. I have an older 211k with a built in ota tuner and I haven't used it in about 2 or 3 years. I keep it hooked up to power my terk 44 ota antenna. I can do scans for ota channels and use it for watching ota live only. Still works but I get no guide data at all for the ota channels.

I do not sub any premiums but I believe if the dvr can play it out the component line the 1512 can record it to your pc.

I have the HD component video one and it works fine with a minimal laptop. It compresses the component video internally and your PC just gets a compressed stream over the USB port that it writes to disk. Essentially the PC does not do much at all.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I have little if any premium channel content on my DVR and EHD, but it's stuff I'd like to keep for future viewing. I never even knew such devices existed (like the Hauppauge), but it'll be nice to save this stuff to a computer hard drive and burn it to DVD when I get around to it. Now if I could only find a way to be able to complete this task in something quicker than "real time". I'm already pulling out what little hair I have left every time I convert another of my vinyl albums to CD. ;)

I have a ViP722 and a OTA module that I bought from Dish and installed. After 20 years or whatever it's been, I'm fed with Dish and am scheduled for a DirectTV install next week. The Genie does not have an OTA, ATSC tuner and neither does my front projector in my home theater. Therein lies the rub. Now, if the module still "tunes" and will transmit thru my HT receiver, all's well that ends well.

You can buy (or rent, not sure) the AM21 tuner box for the Genie.

In order to do it quicker than real time, you'd need access to the video/audio stream (like ripping a DVD or Blu-Ray for personal use). Because the Dish stream is encrypted and access is restricted to the video output, you can only use what is coming out of there.

Now the good news is that you can record faster than real time if you put the video in 4x, 15x, 60x, 300x fast forward. The only catch is you won't have audio and the video will be in FF mode forever. So just a minor catch, but it'd be much quicker!
 
When I did my transfers I did it when I was home and doing other things. Essentially start it, set a timer on my phone for a couple minutes before the end and left it running. Come back stop it and start the next one. Yes it is time consuming, but you would be surprised how much you can transfer over a weekend.

I cannot remember any more, but does Dish have a play all option for a folder?

On the hopper, they have an autoplay, I beleive the VIPs do as well.
 
When you click on myrecordings, for the DVR screen, what are all the options on the right side?... It has been a very long time, so I can remember exactly where I would have seen it, unless I lost my mind and imagined seeing it on my old system.

If it is there, it is in one of those folders...possibly even another sub folder of that folder. Maybe Edit, group, or group edit.
