Dish Anywhere vs DirecTV Everywhere (Mobile DVR)

So, I am currently scheduled to get DirecTV installed on Friday, but I am starting to have second thoughts. While DirecTV has a better deal: $50/month for 24 months on the Select Package (everything but taxes included), plus access to an Unlimited data plan on AT&T (my wireless provider), I am concerned about how well the DirecTV Everywhere Mobile DVR functionality will work.

Currently, I have Tivo which includes the ability to download any recording to a mobile device for offline viewing. My wife and I both use this regularly. From the limited documentation I can find about DirecTV's Mobile DVR functionality, it is not clear whether I will be able to download all recordings. It seems like some channels are not available for this functionality as well as certain programming on other supported channels. I obviously cannot test this prior to getting DirecTV installed and committed to the 2-year contract, so I am looking for guidance on how this functionality actually works.

If it is too limiting, I may be willing to consider Dish instead. While it would cost me $82/month to get the channels I want, if I can actually download any recording to my phone or tablet for offline viewing, it might be worth it.

Can anyone compare this functionality between the two services?

Thanks,
Ted

I would ask the question in the Directv forum? Also what service do you have now cable? If you are considering both Directv and DISH be sure to contact a DIRT member to be sure of what DISH would cost as a new member for the channels you want.

I posted in a thread in the DirecTV forum, but no responses thus far. I have OTA + Streaming currently.

Ok, I can't comment on the Directv Everywhere but make sure you have the correct cost as a new customer with DISH by contacting a DIRT member here. Seems like way to big a difference even if you had to get a higher package to get one or two channels.

i have seen many posts on the directv forums over compatibility issues with various phones/tablets for the app

just an fyi

Essentially, it comes down to 1 channel: BBC America. It is in the D* Select package: $50/month (including 2 room setup), but on E* it is only in the AT200 and above, which according to the Dish website would cost me $81.99 for a 2 room setup. Half of the reason I decided to go back to DirecTV is I miss that channel. If it was in any of the PS Vue packages, I would probably do that instead.

Thanks. I can stream fine on the iOS app, which I already have access to. Again, I cannot test the download capability without actually completing the installation.

Can anyone speak to how well the Dish download for offline viewing works? Does it work reliably? Are there any limitations?

I've only used it a few times, but with no issues.

As Tampa said, make sure you are signing up/researching as NEW cutomer with Dish. I have not seen the current New Customer offers, but I would guess they would be in the same ballpark as D's. Contact Dirt as suggested!

It may be for that one channel it would be less with Directv. It does appear it would be $81 for two rooms Hopper and Joey for Top 200. But still check with a DIRT member.

Full disclosure: I am an AT&T Wireless customer, so I also get an additional $10 discount on my wireless service when I have DirecTV as well.

I was told about two months ago when researching this that direct tv is working on a new sling type box that they are completely out of stock and won't make more until the new player is out.

According to their website, all I need is an HR44 or better. I would expect to get an HR54 as a new install.

I was told that too and even had the part ordered until I had my setup and that wasn't' included. I canceled my order and moved to Dish. I went thru a third party reseller who gave a friend of mine a 100$ for the referral and me a $100. I also saved a few bucks a month off the package. I thoroughly enjoy the 16 tuners.

while you may get an hr54, its really only guaranteed for 4k installs
directv considers all genies the same, unless you have a 4k tv already

Echostar owns the patent on Sling technology and AFAIK DirecTV isn't going to have anything like it any time soon. DirecTV's version of TV Anywhere is logging into their web site and watching some of the channels and VOD's they offer streaming from there.

Yea, we had a guy the other day who tried to get that working and it didn't work for him at all.

Read the wording very carefully that says "With a high speed internet connection, you can stream them or download to your mobile device and watch them offline." which seems to imply the content comes from the internet and not from your DVR.

Has anybody on the DirecTV forum answered yet?

you need to read the entire thing

Mobile DVR is a DIRECTV app function that gives you the freedom to enjoy shows you recorded to your DVR Playlist anywhere you go-on your tablet or phone. With a high speed internet connection, you can stream them or download to your mobile device and watch them offline. Plus, you'll get access to even more live streaming channels.
