Earnhardt Jr. to retire following 2017 season

http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-me...arnhardt-jr-retire-following-2017-season.html

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire following the 2017 NASCAR season, Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday in a press release.

The 14-time Most Popular Driver has won 26 times in 603 starts over a career that began at age 24 in 1999. Among his accomplishments are two Daytona 500 crowns (2004, 2014) and two championships (1998, 1999) in what is now called the NASCAR XFINITY Series.

Earnhardt, 42, returned to competition in the No. 88 Chevrolet this year after a concussion sidelined him from NASCAR's top series for half of the 2016 season. Through his rehabilitation process, Earnhardt has become a vocal advocate for research of sports-related brain injuries.

Sad to see Dale Jr hang it up, but it doesn't surprise me ...
I think the concussion thing frightened him ... to the extent that he had it ... I'm sure plenty of the drivers have had concussions.
That and the fact he's newly married.

I really think he lost a lot of his drive to drive when his Dad passed ... he's never been the same since then.

...and the strange days of the sport continue. The sport has been thru similar "changing of the guard" periods before. Maybe its my age, but feels like this one snuck up on me. Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth are probably the next two out. If JJ were to get #8 (not something I'm rooting for) this year or even next, it wouldn't surprise me to see him and Knaus both call it a career. I think (hope) Harvick still has a few years left in the tank.

Curious question is who takes Junior's mantle as the most popular? Going to be a HUGE hole for the sport to fill. I guess it would default to Chase Elliott, with his Dad's following. I just wonder if he can live up to it. Seems like he has the talent, and he has the team/equipment.

I agree with what you've said here.
I do think that Chase may turn into the next "Most Popular" eventually ...
Interesting that it went from an Elliott to Earnhardt then possibly back to the next Elliott !

I grew up on Earnhardt Sr, then Gordon and Jr, and Johnson as well being the newer old guys, now that Jr's hanging it up, I will continue to watch, I'm enjoying watching Chase and Kyle Larson as the real new guys that I think will be real good.

I think Harvick will be around for at least another 5 years ....
If Hendricks isn't gonna win it, I like Harvick. ( I like Harvick a lot more now than I did when he was young)

I was actually surprised he didn't call it quits at the end of last year.

Awesome race! 1 – 2 for my guys, Stenhouse with some pit strategy makes himself relevant Baby E gets another 30 place finish in his swan song season, and good ole Kryle storms off from another interview. Who will Kryle blame for his poor finish? It’s been Goodyear for a bunch of races this year, looks like this time it might be NASCAR or maybe even his buddy the racing winning # 22, because NOTHING is ever Kryle’s fault.

Thats Little E btw.
Not so little anymore though.

As for Kyle, I didn't leave it on to see Kyles reaction, but ya gotta think he's gonna blame Lagono, seeing he was following Joey and Joey out smarted him into the pits that dropped Kyle from a Top 10 at least. Poor Kyle.

Great race yesterday.....I was glad to see a Roush Fenway Racing driver finally win a race....when I started watching NASCAR in 2000 Roush Fenway Racing was winning a lot of races. I hope to see them win more races. I can't stand Kryle Busch or his brother. I hope JR wins a race this year.

Childress and Roush winning a race, reminds me of 1990something :D

I didn't watch the Geico 500, had to do some other stuff on Sunday, but wished I did. As a big Roush Racing fan since I was barley out of diapers, going back to the #6 Stroh's Light, I was glad to see the organization back in victory circle. I think part of the reason for the increase in performance for the #17 team is better qualifying. Start up front, stay out front.

Did anyone else get the feeling while listening to her weekly 'It's not my fault' interview, that Princess SparklePony is thinking about hanging up the fire suite on her failure of a NASCAR career?

It's really spoke volumes that Joey looked like he was going to cry and puke at the same time and kept mentioning Aric, while the Princess kept going on about her own bad luck, giving Aric an honorable mention near the end. When she was giving her media interview to the rest of the reporters, I was almost going to turn on Sirius to see what she had to say but her constant 'me me me, it's all about me' attitude is beyond sickening.

I did not see/hear it, but I guess I didn't miss much, she's always that way.
Thank you, now I don't have too .... lol

Sadly, two reasons she won't:

1. SHR will review her weekly merchandise sales and talk her off the ledge. (At least it helps fund the 4 & 14 cars, I suppose)

2. Continued coverage like the following. Truex wins the race, Almirola goes to the hospital in same wreck (hope he is ok, BTW), but this is the race headline in CLT Observer this morning:

Sooo.. not many 10 fans here... lol.. I just gotta say I didn't see her interview like that.. she looked scared as hell to me. Look if you wanna carve her for lack of results in NASCAR have at it, but keep in mind... they're all people inside those helmets, her and Joey were likely both in a state of shock on some level after that, and Danica has had at least one friend and fellow competitor die following a crash. There is little doubt in my mind, she was very concerned for Aric as everyone was/is. She's also been in many high speed scary looking wrecks that totally were not her fault. I'd be questioning my luck as well... Go 88!
