is there something new at 83W? I noticed on SatSignature that there's some rather strong signal on Ku (nothing on C-Band). I don't have a dish pointed at 83W so I have not tried scanning it...
Yep! Looks like someone has put something up in the slot or, moved an older bird that is still operational into this slot. Looks like the RX antenna is not quite polarized too!

well, the spectrum on satsignature is now quite full, in both C and Ku. Quite a difference in just 2 days!
I scanned Ku , detected a transponder at 12139H with a high SR (somewhere between 43k and 44k). No channel detected though, so probably data. Sometimes it gets detected as 12160H, not sure why, maybe my Amiko miniHD RE is not liking that high SR?.

Here is the latest on the AMC 9 replacement according to Satellite Today:
AMC-6 recently arrived at the 85°W orbital slot in a fleet management move that was planned before AMC-9's failure. When AMC-9 failed, AMC-6 was used to restore some of the Ku-band data traffic that was on AMC-9. AMC-4 was drifting to 134.9°W to provide aeronautical data traffic when SES received FCC approval to stop the drift at 85°W. SES will transfer Ku-band data traffic from AMC-6 to AMC-4 at 85°W, drift AMC-6 to 83°W, and transition the data traffic from AMC-4 to AMC-6. After the data traffic leaves AMC-4, AMC-4 will restart its drift westward to 134.9°W.
AMC-6 at 83°W is authorized for C-band and Ku-band operations but it might not be able to provide full restoration for AMC-9 traffic as solar array string failures have limited AMC-6's transponder capacity. A lot of AMC-9 services restored to other satellites may have to remain on those other satellites due to lack of transponders on AMC-6.
So I guess it sometimes pays to keep the older satellites on backup status just in case. AMC 6 is 17 years old. AMC 4 is 18.

Isn't most of the sat's getting up their in age? a sat that is 15 to 20 years old is ancient isn't it?

New satellites go up all the time to replace aging ones. Just like anything else.
This is strange! Ever since satsignature.com has been showing substantial activity on 83W I have daily scanned and not picked up anything, until today. But what I am now picking up does not correspond to anything they have showing!
Currently, I am picking up six transponders, all S2 except one news feed. The five S2 are at 11740, 11980, 12020, 12060, and 12100, all with 29997 sr and all Horizontal (most of them barely register, showing SQ of 0-20, with one showing 26-28 SQ on the AZBox. The newsfeed (adtec) is at 11836 H 3978 and is at 70-72 SQ. I don't pick up any Vertical transponders.
As I say, none of that corresponds to anything satsignature is showing, and if fact, goes directly against what they are displaying!
Before anyone says my dish is off, the LNB is on my 75e fixed dish and is a dual sat, quad output LNB, the other side of the LNB is 87W and I know the dish hasn't moved, as LPBS is coming in with the usual SQ (as are the other LNBs on the dish showing what they should). I even checked on the Pansat (which has a separate line from the LNB) and it also found the news feed.

satsignature.com. SAD.
The once-promising site is going down the tubes. They no longer have AMC-6 83W when you click on that satellite. It's another satellite in the arc. I guess the dish was moved onto another satellite but the contributor never reported it to satsignature.com or satsignature.com never fixed it on the site to make 83W "offline".
Many other sats that used to be online are now offline as well. It's getting easier to find a wrong satellite or offline satellite than a proper satellite.

Casey at Legalfreetoair.com owns that site, and it's kept updated pretty well.
I have recently noticed that the spectrum they show as 123 W Ku is of something else. I have not figured out what it is but does not match the content that I see when scanning. Too bad, that's otherwise a fantastic tool.
Yes, I have noticed several satellites listed as off-line, but that was the first satellite that I found that had totally wrong information (haven't figured out which satellite they are showing instead). Still a good site to check signal levels to check if a channel you are missing is gone, or just having power problems. Hopefully, they will correct some of the errors.
Yes, I use that site, too. What I like about satsignature.com was you could check the signal levels on the transponders so you could check whether there are power issues, and when new transponders show up.
For 30W, I use this site: Hispasat 30W-4 (1D), Hispasat 30W-5 (1E) (30.0º W) / Banda Ku Alta :. Portal EDS
Languages are Spanish or Portuguese, but not necessary to be able to understand the information.
They keep it fairly up to date, at least for 30W, don't check the other satellites they have listed very often, so don't know how up to date they are.
I've refused to use it ever since being banned off of Legal Free to Air.

At LFTA, I made a account and posted a few times and then got banned with no explanation. I didn't bother checking why and then after a while I got emails, haven't seen you for a while, etc, etc, but I never bothered going there again.
Figured maybe they made a mistake banning me but I still never went back, can only waste so much time online anyways. I do still use Sathint though, it's usually pretty accurate.
