Young Sheldon

Good premiere, the only problem I see is how long the show can run, because a teen Sheldon in college won't be interesting.

I love the casting of the younger Mary. Zoe Perry has her mother's look, voice, and mannerisms down pat.

OK, but do not see how you get several years of episodes out of it. Also an adult nerd, Aspberger's, OCD, being picked on by peers is one thing, a nine year old being picked on by teenagers and adults is another.

Among other things, the writers are too hampered by what we know from BBT. Young Sheldon is too sweet and innocent, and really hasn't shown any real insights yet. That's in spite of endless comments on how smart he is without any demonstration of same.

I see it gone at mid-season unless they ramp it up.

Did not like the show. I watched Big Bang Theory to make sure I wanted to give it up, and I’m confident I made the right decision after watching last night’s weak season premier. I left the TV on as BBT ended, about to switch the channel when Dire Straits came on. I watched Young Sheldon, and was not impressed one bit. None of the characters were likeable. I think I mentioned in the Big Bang Theory thread that the idea of the show reminds me of the WB show, Smart Guy (which I loved) from 20 years ago and it does more than ever.

1 – Kid who’s too smart for his own good, that makes the jump from elementary school to high school
2 – Smart kid who’s book smart but has no street smarts, and that plays into plot line
3 – Older brother who resents younger brother for being in same grade
4 – Older brother is into sports and faces adversity
5 – First day of high school there a parent-principal meeting discussion whether or not it was the right move to bump the kid up so many grades
6 – Smart kid is a tattletale

The best part of the show was the Radio Shack at the end. That was classic. Not enough to keep me interested in the show when it comes back in a month or whenever.

BBT is always careful to get the science correct. Tonight's episode of Young Sheldon was sloppy. The orbital stuff looked OK although the dialog was trivial. However this is supposed to take place in 1984-5. They referenced FTP and PID controllers. This stuff is 5-15 years in the future.

Look at the poster on the brothers wall of Axl Rose.... That's from the Use Your Illusion tour... early 90's. :)

I just watched the episode. On the journal he sent to Houston it states 1989.

PID unquestionably was later than that. But I thought FTP was used even in the ARPAnet days. Did it have a different name then? Not that it really matters there are some anchronisms in the show.

Meemaw is played by Annie Potts (Ghostbusters, Designing Women, etc) A wonderful actor.
Sheldon's Mom in BBT is played by Laurie Metcalf
Sheldon's mom in Young Sheldon is played by Zoe Perry, who is Laurie Metcalf's daughter.

My recollection was that we tended to use Kermit for file transfers back in the mid 80s. It was available, but might not have been common on HP-UX systems I was working on.
