Will you pay a premium for an iPhone 8 (X)?

Many people will "defend" this non-standard resolution after the fact with a comment like, "well, I don't really use my phone to watch videos anyway, so it's not a big deal to me".

Hard-core Apple fan-boys do it all the time, like....

"I never have had to charge my phone at the same time I wanted to use my headphones"
"Is it really a big deal if it takes a few seconds longer or more than one try to use FaceID when people are waiting in line behind me while I try and use Apple Pay ?"

Okay but that’s not what I’m doing. I have given my reasons for liking the iPhone X screen several times in this thread. Plus it’s not like this is just Apple doing this. Many of the most popular android phones do the exact same thing. Maybe a tall phone that isn’t super wide is just something people want....

For the record I was critical of Apple removing the headphone port on this site too. I was also openly critical of how often TouchID didn’t work on my iPhone 6. I don’t just automatically approve of everything Apple does. I don’t see the issue with FaceID though. So far it has been much more reliable than TouchID ever was for me.

Do you who don't have the iphoneX understand that the X can do 16x9? It just makes the screen area smaller than the + versions. Frankly, I'd also be surprised if non tech geeks even care about aspect ratios. Most don't even know what that is. After all, who is it that shoots video in the vertical format? People like me, Or your average goofball who's limit to understand video is where to push the record button. :D

Wanted to wait a few days before giving my opinion of the X. Bottom line, I really like it. Huge step up from my old iPhone 6 that was struggling with battery issues. The face recognition is fantastic. It works 99%+ of the time. Even with a hat, sunglasses and ear protection (I was blowing leaves). It is very snappy (as all electronics are in the beginning). The lack of a home button takes a few days to get used to, but now it is seamless. I was using my wife's 7+ last night and momentarily forgot how to navigate without the new gestures. I did have several apps that I needed to delete and re-download because they wouldn't update properly.

The Gmail app finally got it's iPhone X update today. There are still a few holdouts but this was by far my most used app that hadn't received an update yet. It's very nice to have the entire screen in use for something like mail that requires a lot of scrolling.

I would obviously prefer that every app gets the update but I'm pretty happy with where things are at right now.

"...manifest in portrait mode..." heh-heh-heh...

Consumer Reports has finished their tests on the iPhone X. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is still at the top of the heap, with the Galaxy 8+, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8 tied for text in line.
(note, you do need a subscription to visit.)

The biggest surprise for me was the Battery Life rating of the iPhones as "Good" and how Samsung has turned the corner on battery issues getting over 24 hours in CR's tests.

I am really enjoying the wireless charging now. I am glad they finally added that!

I am not aware of any yet. I know Apple is supposed to come out with a charger that would charge three things at once. Sometime next year.
I don't have Apple Watch, so I don't really need that.

How long does it take to charge versus using the cable?
MacRumors just did some testing on various chargers, including wireless ones, here. If I'm reading it right, a 7.5w wireless charger takes 60 minutes to go from 1% to 46%. That's not much faster than using the standard 5w wired charger that comes with the phone. Other than convenience, there's not much benefit to wireless charging.

On a related note to charging, in this same testing, they determined it's no benefit to buy a high-wattage (wired) charger, at least not above 18w. The iPhone simply won't accept higher charging in order to charge faster. They got the same results from 18, 29, 30, and even 87 watt chargers. The best bang-for-the-buck is an iPad (12w) charger - it costs the same as the 5w iPhone charger too.

Since the Apple phones don't support Qi quick charging, that's not surprising.

Going forward, I'm betting competitive pressures are going to force Apple to try harder and some manner of fast wireless charging will have to be implemented. Then, I would hope that a Qi fast charger would be beneficial.

They did up it to 7.5w in the new update (from 5w).

I didn’t measure it, but for me the charging speed is never an issue. It’s fast enough.
It’s more about the convenience. I just put my phone on the wireless charger when I go to bed, without removing the case. Much easier than trying to hook up the lightning cable in the dark.

I just started the ball rolling toward an iPhone 8 for me. It probably won't be until early next year, but I'm looking at our Company's EPP through the Apple Store and with trading in my iPhone 6, it isn't too bad getting a 64 GB iPhone 8. That also means I won't be using Face ID for another few years and they can work the kinks out. Plus, maybe Apple will decide to use the patent they have for a fingerprint sensor in the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone and implement Touch ID on future iPhones. Please!
