DirecTV has crazy retention deals right now

I called today. I first called the general number and asked if there was anything I could do to lower my price. The best the CSR said he could do was $5.00 per month. I told him never mind. I called back after I talked to my Cable Company (which I really don't want) they quoted me $132 including Internet. Called back DirecTV told the Robo voice I wanted to cancel, I told them what the Cable company offer was, and I told the DirecTV CSR I understood they couldn't really offer me the same deal because DirecTV didn't offer Land based Internet. In the end I got $50.00 off per month for 12 months and Discount on Starz for 6 months and free Showtime for 4 months.

I got 70 dollars off for 12 months. plus 12 dollars off for starz and showtime for 6 months. thank you so much for this thread!!

All these companies are hiking prices up. My friend is going to leave Wow cable. They started out good and better than Comcast when they were first out but now they’re just like them . Won’t give deals to stay . Wanting to hike her bill up $60!They claimed her internet was 90.00 alone. Point is all these companies play the same game.

I’m getting the package with directv that’s below the highest one for $60 a month and that’s with the $25 off and promos and that’s good for 2 years so I’m not planning on calling them to lower it. I could I’m sure call in and ask for additional credits but I doubt they’d lower me down any further. Only had them 6 months now.

Unless you call you will never know.

I wanted to get rid of premier, so I called with no intent of taking advantage of this deal.. They downgraded to xtra without any problem and then started offering deals without me asking...

$50 off the whole thing for a year
$10 off Showtime for a year
free HBO for 6 months
$10 off Sports Pack for 6 months

I don't mean to beat an off-topic dead horse, but I do want to clear up something from earlier...
I didn't mean to imply that the pixelation itself is widespread in that when you're watching TV, it happens frequently. I meant that the issue itself is widespread in that people across the country have reported it. Not as many have reported it here as other places. Check out the forums on the Directv help area of their website. DBSTalk has several threads about it for locals and several about it generally, many that are long and have been condensed I think. I have seen it happen up to a few times an hour an any channel. Personally, I think it's gotten better since just after Thanksgiving. I only see it on Sunday Ticket channels, a few RSN channels, and ESPN now and no where else.

Wow ....
Wish Sprint would have done that for me .
I was with them for 15 years ...
Spent $100 a month (for 1 phone) didn't have family member to compensate and make that bill feel better.

They were offering others the same thing for $60, but not me, I didn't qualify ... (I was not a complainer to them though.)

When I finally moved on, they never even made an offer to keep me.

15 years, never missed a bill, always paid ahead of time and this is what I got from them.

Never called afterwards to win me back either.

They STILL don't have 4g in my area, after telling me for years while I was still there ... 3months, 6 months whatever.

So glad I moved on.

Speaking of Sprint, they just put a $1500 credit on my bill and I owe them money on a business account.

I wonder when they will figure out their mistake and come asking for their money back.

12 months in to a contract with discounts expiring this month.. took only 5 minutes to essentially lock in the same discount going forward (which I think is what new customers get now).

5 minutes, saved a bundle.. totally worth it. Could I have gotten more, maybe.. but I was happy enough to get what I got.

Many thanks to the OP for the info.

After a few months of paying some high out of line bills I made the call again and got the 50 off for 12. Best 5 mins spent in a long time.

Following up on my earlier post:

DirecTV has crazy retention deals right now

Quick recap, current bill:
XTRA package, 2 receivers, no pay channels.
$78.84 (after $50 discount)

A few weeks ago they added another $60/mo discount (no contract) that will show up on my next bill.

So, my contract is up and I called back to see if they would apply any other discounts to replace the $50/mo that just expired. Surprisingly they added an additional $20/mo discount (no contract) so, a total of $80/mo discount, no contract that would bring my monthly bill to $43.82 + tax.

Then I called back to simply verify the discounts / price with no contract -- verified ok. But, the guy also offered ANOTHER $30/mo discount, but this one required 12/mo contract. I was seriously thinking I'd cancel regardless but, that would bring my monthly bill to $13.82 + tax!! Insane!!

I understand that the XTRA package will increase $7 more in January, but even after that, the monthly cost $20.82 + tax (just over $22/mo) is way less for the same channels than any streaming service. I didn't take the extra $30 discount but I'm seriously thinking about it. I don't really want the 12/mo contract and the whole pixelation / rain fade thing sucks. But $22/mo is enticing and I've been fairly pleased with DTV for many years.

On the streaming side, I've been using PS Vue and have been really pleased with that. There's a couple channels it doesn't have that XTRA does have (not super important to me) and PS Vue bill is $48.70. I'd really love to support the streaming services but the ultimate goal is lower, more reasonable prices for TV. I don't want the streaming services to fail because then everyone just kills all discounts and we're back to where we were a year ago. Decisions, decisions..

Oh well, I guess the point is they're just about giving the service away to retain customers and put up a fight against cord cutting.

I went from 123 down to 70 a month just calling the # that showed up on FaceBook two weeks ago. They have since shut that # off. It went straight to Loyalty/retention. I didn't threaten to leave or anything. Just asked if i could get in on the deals I'd been hearing about. I keep all the same services and the free HBO I found out I had been getting for a while for some other loyalty reason. I found out accidentally by signing into HBO GO one night with my ID instead of my son's. Looked at my online bill and saw I have had free HBO for a while with no kinda expiration date. And on top of that I don't have an ATT phone, I'm on VZ. Oh and also the CSR said call back around this time next year for more of the same maybe.

Your right. It works the first time, but it does get to the point where they figure it’s no longer worth having you as a customer.

I remember several years ago sprint sent Letters to about 8000 customers and told them they had 30 days to switch to a new carrier and said they would waive all the cancellation fees.

Basically took all the complainers and got rid of them.
Ha ha..I remember reading a story about this woman who filed a lawsuit( of course) because Sprint cancelled her account. The reasoning for the "get lost" was that she complained too much.
I like it. People that constantly carp and moan about every little thing that bothers them should not be rammed down the throats of any business.
I wish we could go back to the days of "your money is no good here".

It is not just the Cord Cutters, it is the Cord Nevers, there is no growth at all in the Cable/Sat. TV subscriber base, 4 million people are born every year in the US, 2.5 million die, that is 1.5 million new people every year and that has been the average for the last 30 years.

For example my son is 27, daughter is 22 and they are perfectly happy with Netflix, Hulu, you Tube, etc they just do not care about Cable TV, my son could easily afford it ( daughter still in school) but he cares nothing about it and that is how the majority of kids/teenagers/young adults feel also.

Pay-TV to lose 26% of subs by 2030

During this time, legacy MVPDs will experience considerable subscriber losses, due not only to long-term industry trends but also growing competition from virtual pay-TV providers. Consequently, legacy pay-TV penetration will fall from 81% of US households in 2017 to 60% in 2030, down 26%.

“TDG said early on that the future of TV was an app. Unfortunately, most incumbent MVPDs weren’t taking notes,” notes Joel Espelien, TDG Senior Analyst.

“The question is no longer if the future of TV is an app, but how quickly and economically incumbents can adapt to this truth and transition to an all-broadband app-based live multi-channel system.”

The end of net neutrality may bring this trend to a screeching halt.
I will explain.
I theorize that ISP's will alter the way they bill their customers.. Presently, ISP's bill their customers based on the speed of the connection chosen. Cell phone companies bill based on the amount of data used.. Customers are sold a limited ( or not) data plan. Use more than the limit and pay more.
I believe cable companies that are also ISP's will eventually change billing to the Cell Phone company model. The reason I think this is because the cable company leaderships see the future with fewer pay tv customers. Meanwhile those who choose streaming services are using the ISP pipeline to circumvent the pay tv services. I believe The ISPs will see cord cutting as a threat and now that they are no longer under the thumb of net neutrality, will change their billing model.
It will be Use more = Pay more.

Thats fine as long as they also LOWER those that Don't use as much .... but I doubt we'll ever see that.

I switched to Hulu with Live TV but decided to give DirecTV retentions a chance first. I got a terrible offer. She told me since I was grandfathered on a retired packaged I wouldn't receive a price increase this month. The first and only offer she made was $25 off per month for 12 months and a six month free trial of the Sports Pack. She then tried to sell me on DirecTV Now and lied to me about my local channels being available (none are available; she said all were available). Finally, after telling me she had never heard of Hulu with Live TV, she told me that I had to pay extra for a DVR with Hulu (which isn't true). Amazing how she knew that even though she'd never heard of the service before. The cancellation was processed with no further attempt to retain me.
