I have been able to get a few more things done on this project. The pole of course required the most work. Digging huge rocks out of the ground is not my idea of a fun time. The pole arrived tied to the bumpers under the truck. ;) It's what you do when it won't fit in the truck, on the truck, or on a trailer. Of course it was rusty and would not be presentable in that condition. First I rubbed it down with emery cloth to loosen the surface rust and rinsed it off. More work with a wire wheel and then a scrub down with CLR cleaner. It was now in a condition for some rustoleum :) I built a bracket to clamp it to the rafters and really hold it secure. Lag bolted into four rafters with 3" lag bolts.

Here's what I use for my poles, antenna mounts, and old antenna towers. You can also buy it by the case: Rust-Oleum Professional 20 oz. Flat Gray Cold Galvanizing Compound-7585838 - The Home Depot

So it's halftime and not raining :) Time to hang the dish. Had my boys lend a quick hand and put it up.

So what was going though his head looking at the other brother. :D

I'm glad to find a thread about Primestar 1.2m(s)
Back when I last messed with FTA the wife and I spent a few weeks driving around the country side here looking for these (great sport) as they were used a lot up here in western WA where we were on the edge of the footprint and had constant signal sucking rain to deal with, I think I have 4-5 of them sitting around now. I only had one active at the time. I was able to use the original feedhorn lnb(?) to get signal and got a few things on a Viewsat (VS2000). I have moved a few to our new house in NM and have a couple to go.

Question....
Does someone make a modern feedhorn that will take modern lnbs for this reflector?

PS
I like your pole transportation technique. I have done similar things with HF yagi antenna material......:biggrin

I guess the next big question is
"Who makes today's Cadillac receiver?"
Well you nailed that right on the head ;) Nobody makes a "Cadillac" receiver IMHO. 4K is the next big thing. But I've not heard of any yet without some kind of issues. Their are some expensive STBs with lots of bells and whistles but as a satellite receiver just so-so. Was hoping there was something in the pipe but no rumors yet. Beware of cheap hacker boxes from the far east. :(

Go with the Amiko Mini HD RE receiver for now, until something better comes along (Fat chance). It's an excellent receiver! It's not that expensive, so it's a good one to get your feet wet again on a starter system, yet will still be good for a secondary tv set if you ever upgrade to another receiver.

Is that good for C-Band and KU or just KU?
Thanks

Good for both. That's what LNBs do, convert the frequencies to those the receiver can use. Both C-Band and KU are converted to the same frequency range of the receiver.

Mounting pipe for Primestar....

In case you did not get the pipe with your Primestar and need one...
I just bought a 3" OD x .120" Wall x 6' L ASTM A513 ERW Welded Mechanical Steel Round Tube at a place called Fastenal for $57 and change (including tax) new.
I guess Fastenal is a national chain so you might be able to find one in your area.
