VIP Receiver Retirement

So, when the ViP612/622/722 units are pulled from service, do you think they’ll all go at once? Or maybe start with the ViP612s?
They will probably start with the ViP622, since they have a ten-day head start. ;)
I just saw Dish Depot has a disclaimer you must activate buy jan 18 on all vip receivers. Looks like a lot of boat anchors are going to be available soon.
211 k and z they are still selling for now . They have the 622 as January 8 . Probably a typo. What are all the other retailers going to do with these receivers
Seriously, the ViP622 is the oldest model, and the one with the most equivalent replacements (ViP722/ViP722k) so the ViP622 should probably go first, along with the original ViP211, which came out at the same time as the ViP622.

NO, you will be assimilated to the Wally and Hopper class of receivers. Resistance is futile. Hey seriously, a Wally with a dual tuner ota dongle and your own hard drive can completely replace your Vip receiver . I have been testing my Wally and it works just as good as my hopper and I can record 2 sat channels and 2 ota channels at the same time. This is just like the ViP 722k and there is NO DVR FEE -as long as you unass the one time $40.00 fee for the software to be enabled. The only thing you would lose is the tv 2 connection and you can't use Dish anywhere apps with it.
I have 2 722ks both hooked to same HD TV The VIP OTA tuners can add a OTA channel with out a scan, can do a scan without removing channels from stored channels. I can have OTA EPG from several DMAs and can turn my antenna and set a timer.
No way can you do that with the new crappy tuners in hopper/wally if thry work at all

My parents have a 622 that feeds 5 TVs, this works out well since there are only two of them they can switch between 60/73 depending on who is watching TV in each room. Since it's installation over 10 years ago, all TVs have been upgraded to HD and it's probably past due for a hardware upgrade and get them HD on the other sets. Since they don't really DVR, I'm thinking Wallys (Wallies?) might be the way to go with an external hard drive on the one in the living room.

Any idea what offer they could get from Dish on this upgrade? Currently all equipment is owned since they've had Dish since 1996 and I've always installed their equipment, but I'm now across the country so that's no longer an option!

My Wally has Houston satellite locals and we use the ota antenna to get Beaumont/Pt.Arthur locals from the town we live in complete with guide data . If I wanted to I could do the same thing and add another Wally and dual ota tuner and then my dad would have only a $7.00 additional receiver fee instead of a $17.00 for an additional 722k. Right now he has NO dvr fee and is saving the $7.00 dvr fee. I noticed no real problems with the Wally in the 4 days I had it ,before I put it on my second account for my parents ,other than a bad dual ota dongle that was running too hot and made the picture freeze. But it did the same on my Hopper 3 when I switched it. Since then I have replaced the dongle and all is well.

Is there any word of them allowing mixed receiver accounts now that you can no longer activate ViPs?
Which receivers were you wanting to mix? Did you want to keep your ViP and add a Hopper, or did you have some other combination in mind?

Edit: I just re-read your previous post. I am guessing you meant ViP and Wally.

I don’t think you can mix any other VIP receivers except for 211’s with Hopper/Joey System. The VIP 211 must be purchased.

Right, those are the old rules, and it has been that way for a long time. I think the question (and it is a valid point) is whether the rules have changed now that ViP DVR activations are no longer being allowed. In other words, if you have a ViP DVR, and you want to add a Hopper, then you would be forced to remove the ViP. Before, that was fine, since you always had the option to switch back to the ViP if you were dis-satisfied with the Hopper. But now, the ViP could not be reactivated. So, if you don't like the Hopper, then what are you supposed to do? Wally uses the same interface as Hopper, so that is not an answer, either. So, given the change in rules regarding ViP DVR activation, perhaps existing ViP DVR users should be allowed to stay grandfathered, and add newer equipment as desired, instead of being forced to remove equipment that can no longer be reactivated.

But... dish’s goal is to remove old equipment from people’s homes. It has been concluded on here they won’t allow equipment with two different generations of the interface to be in one household. Even though for some that may be nice.

I called and spoke to a senior tech rep he was very nice and informative. He said that they are fazing out the old receivers but if they are already on your account there will be no issues switching them on and off . I explained I own a HWS and a 622 and 922 and sometimes need certain receivers on . He double checked and said I will have no problem at all with them. I hope he is right. If not then it will be time to upgrade. ( I sure will miss that little red light )

I don’t think the VIP 211s are going anywhere right now. I kinda expect they will go sometime in 2019.

I wouldn’t put too much thought into that. Even if he was correct now, that could very well change next month. I think a more reasonable answer would be “as of now, and this can change at a moments notice”.

There was a post on the tech portal, that of course I can't find now, that said as of 1/15 no more VIP new Connects

Does this mean existing customers who already have a VIP receiver on their accounts can no longer reactivate them on their account after they deactivate them?
