i have a hr34 and an hr24, way past due for an upgrade
i have a 4ktv
there is no true upgrade.
if i go hs17 i will lose timers, pip, ect
if i go hr54 i will have to put a mini on the 4k tv with the genie
Why worry about equipment just for 3 channels (with 1 being for PPV only) of 4k?
If you want to watch random content that happens to be in 4k (similar to how most of that programming is structured), you're better off heading over to Youtube. If you spend $9.99/mo, you can watch all the 4k content you can stand, commercial free, and get Google Play Music unlimited streaming bundled in as part of the package.

as i said i am past time for an upgrade. was waiting for the hs17, but it turned out to be less than expected, and not worth the upgrade
Remember DIRECTV plans on having techs install HS17's and the handhelds the techs have allow it to connect via WiFi to see the setup screens without needing a client.
Maybe your best bet is to just do nothing and let the dust settle on 4k strategy beyond a couple novelty channels with either company?
If you upgrade with DirecTV now or switch to Dish, you're re-upping on a 24 month agreement because a tech visit is required either way. With only a couple channels of 4k available today, I wouldn't feel great about being in a good position hardware-wise for the next 2 years.
Of course, I played the whole Voom, SuperDish, Turbo HD, and move to Eastern Arc game in the past, so I'm probably more skittish about this than the average person.

Both seem hard to believe. The former, too low- I see few non UHD TVs for sale. And the latter- well, I just don’t think TVs are replaced that fast.

Based on the displays at Costco, I'd say it's 20% of tvs in households, not for sale since most of theirs are 4k sets.
i would guess in use, its hard to not buy one now, that was from early 2017. i would think its higher now
Even if 50% of deployed TVs were 4k capable, the problem is where the content is being produced.
Youtube is rich with 4k content because flagship smartphones and action cameras like GoPro have been able to shoot in 4k for the last few years. So you have a strong starting base there on top of the semi-pro video producers uploading their content to Youtube.
Netflix and Amazon Prime have 4k content, but it's primarily for the content that is being exclusively developed for their content library. So you can watch Stranger Things (Netflix) or The Grand Tour (Amazon Prime) in 4k, but 99.99% of the non-exclusive content tops out at HD.
For the movie rental business, 4k is being offered for some films, but only as a means of extracting more money from your wallet. 4k Blu-ray discs command a ridiculous premium over standard Blu-ray. On Google Play and Vudu, you can rent or buy 4k movies to stream at a higher cost than the HD versions. Apple is offering 4k for the same price as HD on iTunes, but only if you go out and purchase an AppleTV 4k.
When it comes to live TV, look at what FOX Sports is doing now: College Football Preview: Fox Sports To Produce 13 Games in 4K
Their big news is that they had a single 4k capable production truck that they were sending around to cover 13 college football games, and that's an effort by FOX Sports Labs -- not really even part of their mainstream offering.

If you started when they had those handful of channels, you also needed to do a receiver swap once they really started cranking things up because they moved from MPEG2 to MPEG4. That was kind of my point about this being the wrong time to jump in on 4k broadcast hardware. The current 4k solution that DirecTV has really only makes sense if you're starting as a new subscriber - it doesn't do much for you, but it also doesn't cost you anything extra as a new sub.HD started on Directv with three or four channels. DirecTV also had a dedicated 3D channel. How's that doing now?
I would suggest (with no internet or limited) you get a 4K Blu-ray player ($199) connect that to your 4K tv - it will lest costly over time than Lease +$7 monthly fee for 3 channels
It is more than "YES" that is a problem for the entirety of New York State, New Jersey, and the entire Tri State area. Dish also doesn't have MSG or Sports Channel NY, this means NO local coverage for; Knicks, Yankees, NJ Devils, Mets, Islanders, NY Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, NY Liberty, New York Cosmos, NY Red Bulls or NJ Nets. If you are a fan of ANY Sports team that plays in New York State or New Jersey NO games for you.

Absolutely. I am a Yankee fan so was using YES as the example, but you are right, Dish doesn't carry any of the NYC dma sports channels.

And remember back then TV Manufacturers ( like Sony) were sponsoring the HD channels back then, they are not doing so this time because they feel there is enough 4K content already.
