Kindle e-reader owner's thread

I’m not really an avid reader but there are a few books I’d like to check out, I used one of my $325 Prepaid MasterCards I got from Little Magenta to bring a Pixel 2 over to them to get an ad free 32GB Oasis 2017. Should be arriving Thursday.

Are there any good leather cases for this thing? A buddy of mine at work has the previous Oasis that came with the leather charging case. I loved the look and their feel of it, but it seems there are no equivalent cases sans the charging capabilities for the 2017 version. I’m not interested in fabric ones and the cheap leather cases look well cheap.

A better version of this one, which looks like it has been pulled, would be great. This one looks like real leather, the other cases look like fake man made junk.

You really didn't need ad free..ads are only on the first screen

I've got that Amazon cover, surprised they seem to be dropping it. It is not a bad cover but it only protects the screen, not the body of the Oasis. Not good if you were to drop it. I also have the Fintie leather cover in Foxbat's link. It is OK. It does protect he entire body of the Oasis. The leather does feel kinda cheap but for only $10 what can you do?

Yes, I know. But I can’t stand advertising/marketing in any form, paying a onetime fee of $20 not to see ads no matter how unobtrusive is worth it to me. I love how Amazon calls it ‘Special offers’, another example of psychological marketing BS. ‘With special offers’ sounds a lot better than ‘ads on home screen’. Just like you never see the word ‘contract’, the phrase ‘service agreement’ sounds prettier and is more positive sounding.

Yes, thanks Foxbot. I saw this post earlier when I was at work and looked real quick and ordered the Fintie as well. I didn't see that one in my initial search. Since it's only $10, I'll use it unless something better comes along. I don't mind spending $30-50 on a really nice case. I don't care for tablets at all, but for the tablets I owned, I always bought nicer leather portfolio style cases.

Interesting that they have discontinued the official covers for the Oasis 2017, but owning them, I am not altogether surprised. The magnet, as reviews point out, isn't super strong. The leather is nice however. The case for the Oasis 2016, with charger built in, was much nicer. AND I think the device had a longer battery life. That said, I love the big screen on the Oasis 2017.

I still have my Kindle Voyage, and it feels like a brick compared to the Oasis. Yet, it had the best cover of the bunch.

What's more surprising is it passed the prototype phase, given all the negative reviews. You would think whatever company actually makes the covers for Amazon would have a Kindle to test the thing on before pumping out thousands of them. And then they would see how apparently crappy the case actually is. I tend to stick with OEM accessories if I can help it for a lot of things, I'd love to have an 'official' Amazon cover, but I have a feeling it will just be the fabric one for the 2017 Oasis.

I just ordered a moco cover (I think that's the brand name). It was $13 on Amazon, had a Van Gogh Starry Night cover, and actually protects the Oasis!

Just doesn't have any sort of fold capability like the Amazon one does. But much more protected.

Company decisions are often bizarre, like Apple's decision NOT to make rear cases for the iPad Pro 10.5. Dumb.

I like the case I got, my only wish is there was sort of clasp to keep it closed.

I’ve been enjoying the Oasis with a couple issues. While my Pixel Buds will pair to the Kindle just fine, and I even here is faint click upon connection, I can’t hear anything out of them. Book is playing, volume is maxed out, no audio. I have no problem pairing and getting audio from my various bluetooth speakers. What also sucks is in the car. It will pair to my wife’s Expedition with Sync 2, but it won’t pair to my Navigator running the older version of Ford Sync.

The other thing I can’t figure out is how to permanently delete books from my Amazon account and have them not appear on my home screen on the Kindle when I have All selected as opposed to Downloaded. A few months ago, when I first started thinking about getting the Oasis I wanted to see what ebooks look like on other deices such as my phone and the PC application. I downloaded 1984, only because it jumped out at me since it was the only book that I could get for free with Prime that I actually heard of, and now I can’t get rid of it. When I select Books for Manage Your Content, Animal Farm/1984 appears, but when I select it and click delete, the Yes Delete Permanently button is grayed out. I also could do without the User Guide.

Not sure about deleting books, but since they are just in the cloud, it's not really taking any space.

I'm pretty happy with the case I bought. It's strange to actually see the shape of the device (since the cases on my 2016 and now 2017 oasis were evened out by the case, but it feels much like the protection is better and it it is comfortable to hold. Plus, the case has Van Gogh's Starry Night on it to boot!

With 32 GB and considering how tiny these files are, I’m not concerned about storage space, I just don’t want something I’ll never use be on my home screen or to be on a list somewhere. I finally had some time to look at it the other day, and I didn’t realize there was a separate section in the drop down for Prime Reading under Manage Your Content and Devices. I guess Amazon treats books differently if they were purchased versus acquired via Prime Reading. Which makes sense I guess, since I would assume if you quite Prime you’d lose access to the stuff you’ve acquired as a Prime Member. I had to essentially return the book and then was able to delete it. Once I re-synched the Kindle it was gone.

Never been a fan of headphones or earbuds, but I’ve been trying to find something I can deal with for the Kindle. Truly wireless ear buds are the last thing I would want and I don’t want ones with the thing that sits on the back of your neck either. I see Anker makes wireless earbuds for about $30 on Amazon. I think I’ll order a pair, and see if I can get sound of the Kindle with them.

Yes, once you return a Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading book it is gone. I often will select a Kindle Unlimited book, and then spend the $1.95 it often costs to add Audible to it. The Audible is then mine forever. I did that with Rachel Caine's Stillhouse Lake and the sequel Killman Creek, which I am reading now. It makes my Audible subscription go much further. Saving those purchases for the books I can't get for cheap.

Went on a Caribbean cruise last week and had an unexpected issue with the new Oasis. Sitting in the sun on deck reading and the mostly metal case of the new Oasis gets quite HOT to the touch. Had a high temp warning message as well and had to put it away for a bit to cool down.

My eyes hurt after reading the Kindle app on my iPad a while so I’m considering a Kindle reader. I’m trying to decide between the basic and the paper white. What are the pros and cons for both?

The refurbished is $99 which is a $20 savings over new. Has anyone bought a refurbished Kindle and if so are they any good?

Just pour some cold water on it or take it with you to the swimming pool! It’s waterproof! :)

You might have a bad device. Never had a Kindle Oasis or other e-ink Kindle get hot. And I have used them outside in sunshine many times.

Possible. That is the only time it has done this. I had been out reading in the sun for over an hour. It was in the Amazon case and I noticed the metal frame around the edge was hot to touch. Shortly later got the overheating warning. Hasn't happened since but I was mostly in the shade after that. Probably won't be in the same conditions for another year.
