What Do You Think The Future Of FTA Will Be?

That’s a LONG time away.

True high speed “broadband” Internet doesn’t reach everywhere, not even enough places to ignore the remainder.

And it seems inherently more efficient to “broadcast” a few hundred channels to millions of people, than to send millions of unique programs out to millions of homes over the Internet.

Call me when the LEO, MEO or some other upcoming Internet delivery service actually works, and at a price JSP will find reasonable.

Here in WV there are companies that specialize in running fiber to new markets. We rent space to a company that's strung fiber to places out in the rural community. I'm 8 miles out in the county and in an area where there's no cable or DSL service and now high speed internet is within 3 1/2 miles of my home. The closest person to have it is the man I work for and he's got 100mbps/6mbps service right now.

I figured I'd be dead and gone before I saw it at my house, but now I'm more optimistic. I've spoke with the guy who mapped out this area and he's saying it will be where I live within the next year. I hope so, I'm sick to death of this horrible wireless internet service. I can barely get my email most of the time, let alone stream and at $39.95 a month, it's no bargain. 100mbps looks like a dream to me at this point. :)

Amen WVman. As I have posted before, they ran the FO years ago within 1/4 mile of my house and I don't have it. In fact the thing goes about 12 miles in several directions (that I know of, and I'm sure it is more like 30 in every direction) and NOBODY has it. According the powers that be, this "wonderful" system that was supposed to supply nearly 100% of the county years ago only services a little over 3%. The cables are underground everywhere and no service. Nobody can explain why.

What size are they Gary? Prime, offset? I'm sure somebody could use them.

American internet infrastructure is all based off PROFIT. My parents who live in Romania in a village have a 1000mbps connection for 8 dollars. Sadly, internet and tv are all for profit in the us.

There's a fiber line on 3 sides of me. I'm down in a valley and nothing. I'm in no man's land. :)

Umm... there aren’t any forests close to where they live. Lots of agriculture. There’s only good hunting in the Carpathian Mountains

I had 9 deer in the front yard when I got home at 5:30. Lots of game here. Squirrels, turkeys, grouse, deer, doves and even the odd coyote or two. I have a pond full of fish behind the house. All within a hundred yards of the house. I'm very lucky.

Not sure if it's an option for you or others interested on this thread, but Ubiquiti wireless devices are inexpensive... If you have a neighbor who can get the good Internet service at, you can use point-to-point wireless equipment such as Ubiquiti to bridge the connection to your place. Line of sight is helpful, but it depends on various factors. There are 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz options that might cost you I dunno, around $300 total for both sides. Something to consider if you're stuck with crappy service... become your own "last mile" provider. :)

My neighbor and 45 year friend, unfortunately has the same service as me. Before, he had a satellite internet service, which wouldn't do what I needed to do, so there was no need to share the service. I use Team Viewer to keep track of what's going on with the computers at work, and it will not stay connected due to the latency problem with satellite internet services, plus, the cost of the service is ridiculously expensive.

There are about 50 people in the area that has the same crappy wireless internet I have, and all of those are waiting for Frontier to do something with high speed at our homes. I have 303 acres to roam around on, and I would never trade that for internet service by moving closer to town. I grew up in the city and hated it the entier time I lived there. I can't stand having people looking out their window watching what you are doing.

I'll wait to see what Frontier does, and if I kick the bucket before we get it, I won't need it anyway. :)

My house was built in 2010, and I consider myself lucky to have fiber -- for phone, TV and internet. Yes, it is delicate but as long as I don't dig into the line with a backhoe I'm good.
