OTT TV vs Dish Flex Pack

They both start at about the same price. Opinions?

They are not the same price since with OTT service I do not have to pay receiver fees ( or any other fees) as I would with Dish ( or any one else)

Playstation Vue Core Package, we have DVR and up to five devices at the same time $45 a month.

It comes down to what channels you need, how functional your DVR needs to be (storage space, recording expiration time, and fast-forwarding limits), how many simultaneous streams you need, and which OTT services carry your locals. With so many variables, it's hard to say yes or no for any given user without more details. But generally you'll save money with the base OTT TV package because they don't have rental fees, or extra fees for locals, RSNs, DVR mirroring, etc.

But for a simple user, say one TV with a 211 or Wally, there are no receiver or DVR fees. Maybe if they add one more 211 or Wally, it’s $7.

Not for new customers. I was going to hook my grandma up with Dish and one receiver. Found out there is a new no DVR fee.

So I hooked her up with DirecTV Now. No box fee. No no DVR fee. Plus she gets 20 hours of DVR for free. That is way more than she needs. She loves watching things live.

Yes I know prices for streaming will go up in price and all that.

I really wanted her to get Dish. I have it and love the flex pack. That brand new because fee stopped me. As long as she is Happy I am too.

Comparing conventional DVR functionality with cloud DVR service is perhaps a bit like comparing apples with sponges. Then there's the fact that to complete the picture, you end up spending extra to get some of the features that bring them more in line without ever really getting there.

There needs to be a distinction made when comparing DVR services just like there needs to be a distinction between services that offer only DVD or 720p streams. Many of the hot new wireless plans that deliver only SD on their "unlimited" plans no matter what quality you subscribe to.

I'm not comparing DVR. I have Dish and the Hopper 3. I got DirecTV Now for my grandmother. She doesn't even need a DVR. The fact that she gets to record 20 hours for free is a bonus. I know their is a difference. Some people can live with that difference because of the price and yes it will go up like everything else.

$37 a month for 60 channels no fees is great for her.

Even people that don't have a lot of time commitments can come to appreciate not having to form their days to fit their TV schedule. They don't have to schedule their doctor's appointments around Dr. Oz showings or stay up "half the night" to watch DWTS.

My friend she actually likes to watch commercials. I have tried and tried over the years to get her into a DVR. It was a no go. She will put those 20 hours of recording to good use though.

I don't know how I ever survived without a DVR. The hopper 3 is just fantastic. The built in Sling and 16 tuners make this thing the best out there. If she would use a DVR like me I would get that for her.

I've found that the Dvr is less off a necessity since I went OTT, even though most of the services offer the feature in some form. I can find nearly everything I watch online.

I don't watch enough TV to be in a hurry where a few commercials bother me these days, and I usually use that time to get another beer, let the dog out, throw the clothes in the drier, ect.

But before, it was a must have for me as well.

That said, I do have a tivo, and we will use it to record our Ota shows, although we could just as easily get them through other means. Still, it has lifetime, so might as well use it.

We have 2 TiVo OTA. Dropped locals from the flex pack and never looked back. Lifetime on both.

I'm so glad Dish is fighting back and letting people drop locals if they want.

I can’t drop the locals. Need to be able to watch those informercials at 2 PM in the afternoon. ;)

Flex is definitely competitive, but has fees, but the fees allow access to Dish premium discounts and much larger DVRs.

It isn't as if the OTT guys don't have fees too. Adding fees to give you a usable DVR and additional streams are just the beginning.

no fees with Vue ( DVR and 5 streams), I do not believe You Tube Live has fees either.

But DVR is 30 days, and you can’t upgrade it (which works for some people). Everything has its price, though. OTT is cheaper because it contains fewer frills, which again is an individual thing from person to person.

I would associate extra costs for multiple user access (streams) more with cable/satellite than with OTT services. Is there any cable company or satellite service that doesn't charge for box rental and service on a second and third (and fourth, etc.) TV? And how many of these offer free access outside the home, anytime anywhere, without extra costs? Sure, Dish has Dish Anywhere, but for full access, don't you need a Hopper 2 or 3 (and the extra costs associated)? With Cox Cable, I needed the $30/mo. Contour upgrade (before box rental) to get access to my channels and recordings anywhere outside my living room TV.

Each OTT service does have certain quirks and limitations, but you basically get at least two simultaneous streams (sometimes 3 or 5) anywhere in your home and often outside the home included in the base package fee. With YouTube TV, for example, I get full access, including recordings, in every room of my house, anywhere within home Wi-Fi range, and I could have a couple of other people watching at the same time (with their own viewing profiles), for $35/mo. I'm pretty sure I get full access outside the home, but haven't tried it yet.

Bottom line for me is the biggest savings from OTT live TV services comes in accessing my service anywhere without paying a penny more.

I'm not saying some services don't charge extra for even more simultaneous streams, but that's just to prevent people from sharing/selling their login info too widely. It's really a non-issue unless you have a large family.

DISH Anywhere is also available on the VIP line of true DVRs with a "Sling Adapter".

If Vue and YTTV become competitive in the marketplace, you I think you can expect fees but for whatever reason, they aren't the market leaders.

I consider being forced to watch commercials a fee. 20 minutes/hour (a defensible number for network television) adds up to several dollars a day and that adds up to dozens of dollars a month.

I question the value of consuming a lot of TV outside the home.

I had Vue for a while. I was never forced to watch commercials. I could record to my hearts content.

This is the first place where I have seen people that store so much on their DVR. Everyone I know records and then watches within 30 days. I do have a buddy that stores a few Ohio State games though.

PSVue is great for the price. 5 streams DVR included.

I don't understand why people can't say.... hey nice deal glad that works for you. Its always fees and rising prices are coming. Sure that might happen but not as fast as cable and satellite.

Oh yeah and if OTT becomes a leader maybe that will force good oh traditional cable and satellite to compete. It worked for T mobile. People here laughed and said no way. Boy where they wrong.
