We don't have kids but if we did, we would get them passports. We live in Buffalo and it would be totally worth it. There's so much that Canada has to offer it would be a shame not to expose them to it.

Mine have passports but there never used. And we only live about 20 miles from the Canadian Border!

According to this article A Record Number of Americans Traveled Abroad in 2016 in 2016, 67,000,000 or about 21% traveled internationally. Out of that ‘international travel’ 37,000,00 only went as far as Canada or Mexico that would be 11.5% of the population and 55% of those that traveled internationally. About 6 million went to the Caribbean and about 4 1/2 million went to Asia. Close to 12,000,000 went to Europe. So about 80% never leave the country, and out of those that do approximately 64% go no farther than Canada, Mexico, or our Caribbean neighbors.
So an "Amero" would work out nicely for those people. :)

I’ve never been, but I have heard from people that have, that in most of the touristy spots in Mexico they’d rather have the Dollar than be paid in Pesos. I don’t know how factual that is.
...and as far as the US and Canada are concerned, any coins that are less than a dollar can be easily spent in either country. (except for vending machines)
It still would be nice to have a common currency (dollar) for all denominations in both countries, though. Other countries could be free to join the new currency if a deal can be worked out, and they wish to convert. :)

21% is a far cry from 1% but it's sad it's so low although understandable considering the cost of travel. I wouldn't be surprised if 80% of Americans just can't afford to travel.

I think 80% don’t want to go anywhere else. I can certainly afford it, I just don’t see any need in leaving the country. The USA is so large it’s not like Europe where one has to leave the county to go to the beach or mountains etc...

The 1% was a bit of an overstatement. However I was referring to those that travel international on a regular basis.
Out of that 21% no telling how many of those are cruises to Cancun or Cozumel, or to the Caribbean where you leave the boat when it docks at a new place for about a day maybe.

I don't believe 80% of Americans never want to visit another country. It's not about going to the beach, it's about experiencing something new and different. If everyone stayed at home, Captain Kirk would never have left earth. ;)

I’ve kept both my U.S. & Canadian passports going for as long as I can remember. I wouldn’t give up either one.

I believe there’s one or two countries that use our dollar as their currency, without any deal with us.
