New York moves to oust cable provider Spectrum

So apparently spectrum is being kicked out of NY for not providing what they promised when Charter merged with TWC, I have them for internet but have DIRECTV for tv, my question is who would be my ISP, as it seems they won’t go back to TWC, and I only have them and Verizon DSL as options, would NY be required to get FIOS installed, our mayor in my town has refused to allow them in, not sure how this will work.

Thanks to any help.

What town are you in? Buffalo has FIOS there

The NY PSC has given Charter 60 days to find a company to take over their NY services. I'm really hoping they don't bring in Comcast! Cox might be an ok choice, or maybe they'll spin NY off as a separate company. FIOS is out unless their already in your area. The build out to include the areas where they don't currently have service could take years with the rural areas being the last to get service. And the rural areas are where Charter has failed to perform according to the PSC.

I live in the Albany area in a smaller town Watervliet our mayor has refused to allow FIOS into Watervliet

Get a new mayor.

Mayor and Commissioners are likely on the Charter/TWC/Spectrum payroll under the table. It's that way in my town here, too. Anytime potential competition to the local cable/ISP monopoly tries to get in, they get shown the door quickly.

NY State sucks!

This is nothing but a political move and grandstanding by Prince Andy in attempt to make him self look good as the election race heats up.

Prior to Charter buying out TWC, I was thisclose to getting 300Mb internet as Project Maxx was just getting started in my area. Then that got delayed. Now analog has been removed, CMTS units have been upgraded, node splits have happened, DOCSIS 3.1 is live and I am thisclose to getting gigabit in my rural town of 4,000 people, and everything is being put on hold again because of the idiot governor people 300 miles away in NYC elected.

Here's my conspiracy theory, NY State is giving Charter an unrealistic 60 days to come up with a plan, if no suitor is found, NY State takes over. Because, seriously, who the hell in their right mind would want to do business this this dump of a state and be subject to all of the taxes and regulations the socialist pigs in Albany dream up. Now we have socialized broadband, internet and phone, and NY State collects $$$ on infrastructure that they never invested in.

Verizon does NOT offer Fios is most of the Buffalo area, only select suburbs in Erie County. Down in Boston they were a test bed and Fios is pretty much only available in parts of Boston, Hamburg, Orchard Park, West Seneca, Lackawanna, Cheektowaga, Amherst and East Amherst. The only area Verizon has Fios within the city limits of the dump of Buffalo is in the Buff State area, and that is internet only.

Maybe not all of Buffalo, but I was working back home last year and saw FIOS in other parts of the area, too

I disagree, Cuomo is right to kick them out, they've failed for 2 yrs to do what they promised, I got a thing in the mail saying my Internet went from 60MBps to 100MBps, but never seen a bump or raise, never saw 60 to be honest, and it goes out all the time, and they refuse to come out and check the lines. This is on Charter/Spectrum/TWC or whatever they want to be called, I'm happy they will be kicked out of NY, I just want someone who is competent to replace them, cause DSL won't cut it.

I’d love to know why he opposes FiOS. I’m VERY happy with their Internet service.

Rumor is our town gets a kickback to not allowing anyone else in town, at one point even DSL wasn't in our area, now it is. Plus the guy is a major tool(being nice, I have another word for him, can't stand the man, my Mother babysat him, and he's not the nicest person).

What areas did you see Fios in that I didn't list?

Why is the idiot governor not going after Verizon for cherry picking where they deploy Fios? While I would never ever get Fios if it was deployed here, why are they allowed to serve the ritzy suburbs, but leave the copper rotting in rural communities, where you are lucky to get 3 Mbps. And if I remember correctly, they were supposed to have NYC 100% completely wired up for Fios 5 years ago or something like that. Now Fios is essentially a dead service and will never expand beyond its currently footprint, leaving millions in NYC without. Why wasn't Verizon booted out? Maybe Verizon 'donated' more than Charter did, so that was overlooked.

The governor is not right, he's an flaming ******. The expectations were unrealistic to begin with and all that pig wants to do is interfere with business and free enterprise. Charter is/was in the process of deploying DOSCIS 3.1 resulting in dramatic speed increases. Standard going from 100 to 200, Ultra going from 120 to 400 and the launch of 940. Now all of this, that has been placed on hold. That's good for consumers now, isn't it? What a crock, all the asshat is doing is hurting subscribers with his grandstanding.

Charters minimum speed is 100 Mbps in most of their service areas. If you are getting 60 Mbps that means you either are 1) on a L-TWC plan, not SPP, 2) have an old modem 3) have a signal problem.

My ultimate hope is Charter remains, but I would love to see Comcast come in.

The governor doesn't care about Upstate NY. To him, we're all a bunch of uneducated hillbillies. Perhaps this is all a ruse to distract from the Buffalo Billion Scandal, two months away from the election. At least one corrupt NY slug was sent to the slammer where he belongs. Old Shelly Silver the corrupt assemblyman who was instrumental in keeping pro MMA illegal in NY State will be spending his last few years on earth rotting in a cell. Hopefully one day the current governor is there as well.

How many state employees and state sponsored (tax payer funded) consultants are going to be involved in this nonsense with Charter? More wasteful spending. But then again, this is the state where debates happened over what the official state snack food should be and the state that wants to provide prisoners with free tablets and a free college education. So wasting money on stupidness is no issues for this corrupt state.

If you have the older Cisco modem then they could not raise your internet speed higher, plus if your account is on a"special offer" they won't give you higher speeds either, unless you offer to go off your "special deal".
On my system they had to change out my modem with a newer modem before I went from 60MB to 100MB and my "special offers expired".
Charter Spectrum also has a lower speed internet offer for $20. for 30MB here, the special offer I believe is $14.99 for a certain amount of time. The good thing about Charter Spectrum is they cannot cap their internet for 5 more years, which they promised the F.C.C. no internet caps for 7 years.

I believe it was off Eggert Rd and Harlem area that I replaced a FIOS install with Dish, but had to leave the internet intact and IO know I had seen it in other places but offhand, that was a year ago, I just can't remember now and I agree with you on Cuomo. This thing about FIOS is the internet is great, the Video is hit or miss. We have a local company here in Illinois that uses Fiber. I love the internet, but customers who've had the video say it pixelates, pauses, etc and that guy in Buffalo I was replacing with Dish told me the same thing about his FIOS. I don't think Video is quite ready to be wireless yet

1. I have the 60mpbs plan through spectrum, got the free notice of 100mbps in mail 2. I have a new Spectrum modem, I had better results with my old TWC modem, and 3. they say no signal issues, but it won't stay up. Also they refuse to come out and check the lines, so no I dont have old equipment, or an old TWC plan, everything was changed over, and I regret it as I got better results, not the best, before I got the spectrum modem.
