Shouldn't make it that hard on the Genie's since the client are just displaying whatever the Genie sends it from it's tuners. They just decided it wasn't worth the time to implement it in the RVU environment just like they pulled OTA support from the Genie 2.
Well your in luck.... I doubt the numerical keypad will be discontinued any time soon.I find it much easier and faster to type in a channel number, either to tune to or go to a channel directly in the guide, then fumbling with a cursor and arrow buttons. This is one reason I don’t like the streaming services, no channel numbers.
For what its worth, the chipset used in the C71KW client is capable of 4up 1080p (i.e. 4K TV showing four 1080p images) so theoretically it would be possible. It would need to grab four tuners from the Genie 2 (but hey, the HS17 has at least four completely unused tuners at this time...)
If used in a streaming config, you'd need 4x the bandwidth to supply the four streams - and I have a feeling there will be some sort of a per stream charge for Directv's new IP based product. But maybe if you're willing to pay, you can get it.
Dish's sports bar mode is nice, but it is limited to the Hopper 3 only. Ideally you'd want a solution flexible enough that you can get it on any TV. Even if not on every TV all at once

Sorry I forgot I asked that before in this thread. I should have said which interface would be better for DTV OTT, the new interface on SatelliteTV or DTV NOW's interface?
Do we know for sure that the C71KW is compatible with the HS17? I thought it was going to be used for their new IP delivered service?
That's what I have heard, that it's not compatible with the HS17, or any other Genie for that matter.
I haven't heard anything about the HS27, just that it's in the works. Any links to more information?
I wish that they would start working on a new 4K Genie, so we don't have to pay for a standalone client receiver. They should allow one free C61K, since they Genie HR54 does 4K, but not as a standalone. Just insanity!

Commercial will need stand alone receivers for a long time. The client server solutions are not ideal.
I just wish either dish or Directv would come out with a stand alone 4K box similar to an H25
Why, what's wrong with the client/server for commercial? I see no advantages to standalone receivers, and considering the age of the H25 and how unlikely it is they'll ever make a standalone 4K receiver IMHO it is only a matter of time before they support clients in commercial installs.
Actually, they already do - if you want to get 4K in a commercial install the Directv supported solution is one HR54 and C61K per TV.
It wasn't compatible with the HS17 at the time that C71KW manual posted on the FCC last fall was written, but that doesn't mean it will NEVER be compatible. Maybe it will only ever be compatible with the HS27 and future, or maybe the C71KW is a special model for the Directv IP product and a different model will be used for satellite (since the C71KW has an ethernet port instead of coax)
I wouldn't worry about it, doesn't matter until the C71KW is actually released, and then we'll probably know more about what is supposed to be used with what.
The only other place we've heard about the HS27 (and HS37) was the document that was posted to dbstalk earlier this year that talked about the OTA dongle. Since we now know that OTA dongle was real, I think it is safe to say the HS27 & HS37 are real too (though no real stretch since the naming is a pretty obvious progression)
As for what it will be, what more could they add to the HS17 that would make it better? They aren't going to add tuners. The only thing I can think of is supporting more simultaneous 4K clients. And of course the usual re-engineering to make it smaller and/or cheaper.
