New iphones for Fall 2018 Rumors and facts

Tell me about it! I've spent all weekend in school. :(
There is so much more that is new when it comes to where things are. And the biggest issue was the restore did not really restore everything. I had my entire library of audible books from two clouds downloaded to my 6+ and the restore didn't move any of them. I had to download again everything one at a time. The Apple Pay had to be reloaded. 4 CC was pretty easy but my BJ's card required I get interviewed by a bank CSR before they would approve the new install of their CC to my XS Max and then again onto the Apple watch. That process took 45 minutes. No Passwords were restored and I have to launch each app and re-enter the PW and UID.

Next, I'm in a learning curve on charging the phone from a power bank that will carry easily with the new phone. Specifications are horrible on these. I have one I should send back now because it doesn't fit in the case. Thickness was listed as 0.31" but the truth is it is 0.87 thick. And the top is rounded so the phone slides off.

I will say the battery life on my XSMAX is very good. I fully charged it up overnight from 20% to 100% with the wireless stand. After 4 hours this morning of on time it is only down to 96%.

I really love not having that Home Button. Face ID is much faster and easier to use than I thought it would be, especially with apps that used to require finger print scan. The apps just launch now yet refuse to launch when my wife tries. There is a process you can set up a secondary Face ID I want to test out later. That way my wife can access the XSMAX if I'm not around.

I have NEVER had succes with Kindle or Audible in transferring to a new phone. This time, I just deleted everything from downloads on both. What often happens is the Kindle book will show as not being authorized, and you need to delete and re-download. PLUS there is a benefit if a book has restrictions on installs. If you remove it from the old device, it will NOT count against the install count on the new device.

I have used a wireless stand for a year with the 8 plus, and the only time I have a problem is if the phone wasn't centered properly. In which case I plug it into a lightning cable connected to a USB-C charger, and FAST charging takes over.

I am liking my XS more and more, but a small part of me would exchange it for an XSMax. and maybe when I actually use one, I will. But so far, this has been a good weekend of playing with new Apple toys.

Oddly as I was doing the downloads for actual books and music I noticed that a very few selections were already downloaded, very random though.

I will say that compared to my 7+, this XS Max is one speedy devil. Face ID is so unobtrusive I don’t even notice it. I noticed the speed difference when first setting it up, everything just was quicker.

I didn't even think Face ID was activated, it is so damn fast. It was only today I realized that when you lift the phone, it switches from a LOCK icon to an OPEN lock icon when it has identified you. So much better than I ever expected. I was dreading it.

While my phone has been on the charger when I was in the car today, I am very impressed by battery life. Much better than in the first few days.

I had enough of screwing up every message I wrote due to not liking a small keyboard and returned the XS for the Max. I don't like the cost, but I said the hell with it. I want to enjoy using my device. It arrived today, will set it up when I get home.

I'm really loving my MAX. It's bigger than the 6+ screen and same physical size, plus the speed is awesome.

Did Apple or carrier give you any trouble exchanging it for the bigger model?

Hell no. Verizon was more than willing to take more money from me. And you haver 30 days with them to do asn exchange. Hopefully Amazon will accept my Otterbox back.

The MAX is just beautiful. Almost exact size of my old 8 plus, but a huge screen, and I CAN TYPE on it without screwing up. I'm so happy to have this. It is outrageously expensive, but heck, I use my phone ALL day long. I'm an adult and can have the toys I want. :)

Apple is experiencing production supply shortages due to unexpected high demand for the iphone XS series. A key component, the VCSEL or Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser, the 3D camera that detects face ID made my Lumentum and others has received increased orders and Apple has demanded accelerated deliveries or face loss of business as they seek other suppliers. Finisar and ALite is a second source of supply for Apple's VCSEL components. Analysts believe that this notice by Apple was a warning to suppliers of components to step up production and a hint that the latest 3 new iphone XS and XR series is outselling all expectations.

It will be interesting to see actual published figures.

Reminds me of articles saying the X wasn’t selling well, even after Apple reported out that it was their best seller.

I hope that Apple gives some specifics about what a "sale" is. Back in the day, it seems like they were counting orders from carriers and other units that weren't in the hands of end users.

This is what gives me pause as I have yet to see an X. Even my most hardcore iOS friend was more gushy about the Pixel 2 and he's Apple to the core.

I read some stats from Counterpoint in July where the Galaxy S9 and S9+ had taken over (2.6% each and that iPhone 8+ sales were even with the X at 2.3%). WIth percentages that low, the slices are relatively thin but it does point to the fact that the S9 models combined to represent more than the peak iPhone X percentage in a marketplace with a lot more choices.

Good question on how sales are reported. From readings in other forums I don’t think Apple is doing it that way now, but don’t know for sure.

I saw about a half dozen people with iPhone X’s on my flight to Vegas about 2 weeks after they started shipping.

While Samsung does sell many more phones than Apple does, conjecture in many forums is that at the upper end of phone models, Apple outsells virtually everyone combined. Since Apple really only sells what would be the very upper end of most Mfg’s lineup, that is a very fair comparison. And Apple makes the bulk of the phone profits, so it is good for Apple too.

The S9 and Note 9 are great phones imo, but are hamstrung by Samsung’s poor reputation with updates and upgrades to the OS. And it should be noted that discount deals on them occur fairly often.

Edit: it should be noted that sales of phones from other than Apple and Samsung are little more than rounding errors on a spreadsheet. Most discussion of other than Samsung/Appleare pretty consistent with saying that they are all struggling to make a profit on phones/tablets. Hell, Samsung doesn’t break out phone/tablet sales, but comments indicate they make more money selling phone/tablet components than they do on the actual phones/tablets.

In some surveys, anything under 2% may be considered statistically insignificant (the "noise floor"?). It is a little like how every pay TV provider claims to be #1 in customer service but it comes down to who you ask and when.

As for updates on Samsung's being problematic, I heard they figured that out with version 8 (Oreo) where the manufacturer stuff was bifurcated from the Android stuff.

The magic with Android is that you don't have to live with the way that one manufacturer envisions your world -- there are several top-notch phones from other manufacturers (LG, Sony, Google). Sometimes its nice to be able to retreat to the familiar and not be pushed around in the name of progress. Why should users have to adapt to their appliances?

declaration: I hold stock in Apple uniquely because they "print money".

Anyone who claims they do not have stock in Apple is probably either ignorant of their retirement account holdings, or has all his money hidden in his shopping cart under the overpass. :D

I don't think there is an appliance I have that I didn't have to adapt to from the start. Then if I had an issue with something, I modified it to adapt to my needs. I've already adapted my iphone XS Max and Apple Watch 4 with personal modifications to my individual needs. You don't have to be an engineer to do this because there are more accessories for the iphone and Apple watch than any other similar device and they aren't very expensive.

For example, My Tissot T-Touch Titanium watch has only one band that will fit, the one that came with it. I have 8 different bands for my AW4 and before I even wore my new AW4 I put on my favorite metal band that I used with my original AW gen 1 that is a 3rd party band from Amazon.

I don't consider myself an Apple fanboy but I am a real fanboy of the Apple watch. To use it properly, I did have to buy an iphone but fortunately the iphone performs as well the Samsung I had before. Plus the iphone gave me features I can't get on the Samsung.

Dammit, Don, now I need to find a new hiding place. Thanks a lot!
:D

Mentioning Samsung, it's interesting how they advertised for years mocking the Apple Fanboz standing in line waiting for the new iPhones to arrive and now they find themselves with equally enthusiastic Galaxy fans who may not be standing in line, but certainly are not considering any other Android phone than another Galaxy S-series or Note.

If I were abandoning Apple today for Android I'd be hard-pressed to pick a phone. On the short list would be the Pixel 3 (great camera phone) and perhaps the new Sony Xperia XZ3. But that won't be on the radar for another 3-4 years since I just got my iPhone 8...

I'd bet that you could use almost any modern microwave oven without having to crack the user guide. Two-way FRS radios are probably the most obscure thing I've used of late and it comes down to button reduction and re-use (much the same as being forced to use gestures on iOS devices).

My glucometer has five buttons and I really wish it had more as menus on tiny devices (like watches) are just nasty for someone who is far-sighted.

Not our Microwave oven. We had to go to the manual to learn how to use the browning element and set some other intelligent settings that offer programmed cooking cycles for certain foods. Our antique microwave had a timer dial and a start button. But the new one didn't have a way to turn on undercounter lighting with the microwave light switch. I added that modification.

But yet for all the interest that the S/N 9’s are getting there are hefty trade in or discount deals. And yes, both are great phones.

From just a phone and not ecosystem around it, there isn’t a huge difference between Apple/Android IMO.

With the possible exception of heart monitoring, there are Android phones that do at least one thing the iPhone can do better (outside of running iOS apps) whether what's important to you is the battery life, the camera, connectivity or expandability. The Pixel 3 arguably has multiple features that clearly surpass the best iPhone offering. The Xperia is quite a nice piece and you can never count out LG.
