The YouTube TV Thread

$9 is pretty standard for a Starz add-on, so YTTV isn't losing money there. It's people's data for advertisers that defrays the cost (to what degree we would have no way of knowing). Google/YTTV knows everything I watch now when it comes to live, recorded, and on demand broadcast and cable TV channels. So not only do they feed me videos in the regular YouTube app that pertain to stuff I watch, they can plug in the appropriate ads. For example, by watching some Marvel movies via FX on demand through YTTV, they know to feed me movie trailers for upcoming superhero/fantasy/sci-fi movies. That's just a very simple case. I'm sure their algorithms take into account my location, sports viewing, news watching, content in my library (recorded shows), photos in my Google Drive photo gallery, delivery confirmation emails from Amazon in my Gmail account, etc.

Oops, I just realized I posted in the wrong thread that YTTV has lifted restrictions on NBC recorded shows and recorded shows on NBC owned networks like Syfy and USA. Only CBS and CW shows seem to still be locked.

I was just reading that. Fair assessment imo.

And they nailed it on Vue. Drop PlayStation from the name! Although it may be to late now.

In my area Mobile Alabama/Fort Walton Beach Florida we get all the channels including locals but the only hitch is the CW is On Demand and not live yet the local CW station is a sister station to our CBS station. Also I don't know why PBS isn't getting in on this.

Oh but it is!
I have the PBS app on my Roku!

So now my savings is down to $65. because of having YTTV/wStarz and Philo and The Hallmark Movies Now! app.

None of the online live TV services offer PBS. Apparently some negotiations are underway for various services, but none of them are carrying it yet. If you create an account on PBS's website and register under your local PBS affiliate, you will have access to any shows locally produced through the PBS app. It's all on demand, but I found in some cases episodes of shows will be released before they air live, however that may be because I'm on the west coast.

No live PBS stream even in their Roku app. That's a FAIL as far as I'm concerned

Once I entered my local PBS station there are videos I can play and videos I cannot, for the ones I cannot it says I need a PBS Passport.
I googled PBS Passport and for certain videos you need to subscribe to PBS for as little as $5. a month,or $60. a year to access those videos.
And your subscription is tax deductible.

YouTube TV is offering another free week of service as compensation for this week's outage. I just got the message below in an email. Not too many providers do this for a couple hours of service down time (the first time it was for an outage of about 20 mins. IIRC). The form only asks you to confirm your service email address, so no hoops to jump through.

Hi there,

We’re sorry about the unexpected YouTube TV interruption on Tuesday. We love our TV as much as you do, and our goal is to make sure that you can access your events and shows--whenever and however you want.

To help make this right, we’d like to give you a week of free service. Please contact us via this form before Wednesday, Oct 23 at 11:59p PT and we’ll credit your account.

For any other issues - please get in touch with us by email, phone, live chat, or @TeamYouTube on Twitter.

Thanks for sticking with us.

Sincerely,

The YouTube TV team

Going to try Youtube soon, need to buy a Roku. Is the streaming stick plus the best option for a tv about 40' from router (2 walls)? 1080 tv now but would like the 4k option. Or is the new Premier plus a good option?

Yes that is true, but the first outage was alot longer than the last one, plus they automatically gave us the last refund.
In our area the downtime was not that bad,so no claim from me.I'm just very happy to be saving $65. a month on my programming.:oldsmile2

Well I'm trying the new Premier Plus, and WiFi connection seems string. Sure takes getting use to the schedule! Not sure if I can convince the wife. After playing with an hour, I'm liking it.

First hurdle is wife needs Hallmark, so I added Hallmark Now to my channels, but logging into Hallmark to enter activate code is not happening. The /activate page keeps opening to the price page asking to join and pay (already shows as paid on Roku).

How hard is it to add a family member so there's a different custom schedule? Does the family member need a different log in? Kind of a pain even on a PC to delete and move channels around, but once done it's good.

Betting wife is going to force me to keep Dish. She's really not liking no "info" for each show as you scroll through. You have to start watching it, hit the down, then right button to info. Is there a way to see what each show's about in the guide?

Returning it tomorrow. Wife hates the Hallmark Now channel. "None of the movies I watch are on there". Worth the extra $20/mo to stick with Dish. Much faster guide navigation, no need for 3-4 apps to get what you want, 10 years of movies archives (no loss to me, I'm sure they could all be recorded again), the free previews to add to the collection. I'm at $88 for all channels we want, includes movies pack, Hopper 3 and Joey (and dish protect).

Sorry it's not working out for you sounds like you will need to stay with Dish, apps are not for everyone and price really does not matter as long as there is peace in the family.Good Luck!
