HBO/Cinemax Takedown

Ta heck with AT&T and with HBO/Cinemax. I feel for those who watch those channels, I was one of them, but I started monitoring how often I actually watch either of those 2 channels... opened my eyes a bit. Other than a couple movies a month on both channels, and Game of Thrones.... that's it.

I was debating yesterday on whether I should cancel the 2 channels... guess that decision has been made for me, for now. I'm good until Game of Thrones... if they're still off by then, which I doubt, I'll have to make a few decisions. I know one thing... I'm staying away from AT&T... I've had terrible luck with them over the years.

I didn't think it was possible... Wilder speculation than in the pit. :biggrin:biggrin

But that's what we do here!

This stood out to me.
  • Anticompetitive: AT&T seemingly intends to cut ties with competing distributors; attempts to force DISH to pay for customers who do not get HBO, in turn funding AT&T to give away HBO free-for-life to its own customers
Could At&t be changing the way they want to distribute HBO, by making it part of all the packages? That alone would not be monolithic. It's the second part that would be especially after forcing everyone else to no pay for all their subscribers to get it in all the packages.

Look for DISH to add Sony Movies very shortly.

The movies part can be somewhat replaced. In fact if it drags on I would not be surprised to see Showtime (maybe Epix) and DISH come up with a deal. (Though HBO maintains a catalog of some movies not available elsewhere) It's their original programming that is the problem.

Competition by conglomeration, is what you people are saying. Let's just let Comcast and AT&T own the entire landscape and throw consumer choice out the window. Just wait, when the other Time-Warner channels come up for renewal.

Dish couldn't afford to buy anything of the size that Comcast and AT&T did. $6 Billion in spectrum is a drop in the bucket compared to the $85 Billion AT&T paid, or the $45 Billion Comcast paid. Dish just couldn't afford to play that game. So instead they dropped the ball (apparently) with the spectrum purchase.

How did AT&T come up with 85 billion in cash? By price gouging their phone customers.

If they were price gouging their customers they wouldn’t have customers.

How did Dish come up with billions of dollars to buy wireless spectrum that isn’t making them any money?

I'm not in favor of it, but if those are the new rules of the game, you lose if you can't play by them. In a world where Comcast doesn't own NBC, where AT&T doesn't own DirecTV/Turner/HBO, this isn't a problem. But they do. That, plus the spectrum deal and mergers/acquisitions Charlie has poisoned, Dish's chickens are coming home to roost.

Doesn't Dish own a Sat that DTV broadcasts from??? Just curious......

I'm wrong, correct answers below.

Not everywhere. Why don't you go back to the Directv fanboy forum where you belong?
Yes, not everywhere but it's not the many you say. And as long as you're trashing AT&T for doing what corporations do (and ignoring Dish when they turn around and hike your fees (not programming fees) I'll post.
