How many people use this,is it a good deal? Have two Hoppers 3 and 4 3.0 joeys. One Hopper 3 I own, rest leased. Will home protect cover my owned receiver too?. Can't see a lot going wrong with the Hopper, maybe a hard drive,if the hard drive goes cant I just replace it? How long do you have to have dish protect to make a claim ? Can I just get it when something quits.

Never had it, never needed it. Even if Dish doesn't own your equipment, in my previous experience, they will stand behind it. In fact, a lightning strike once took out my Dish receivers and the insurance company said "it's Dish's responsibility to replace them." Of course, I was leasing my receivers at that time though.

Bottom line, they don't want to lose you as a customer. It's cheaper for them to replace a defective receiver than lose an entire account.

When was the last time you had a tech come out? Also I got it for my Hopper/sling which is getting old, and I just don't trust it at this point.

I believe it was in May. Like I said, if your HWS fails, just call them up and tell them it failed. Dish Protect or not, they'll replace it :)

I"m capable of setting up system, been setting up this stuff for years as a diy person. Just not sure if they would replace my owned unit I got off eBay if it quit.

The savings are somewhat less now getting the protection plan.

If you have a problem and need a service call, most CSR's will tell you that adding the Protection plan now you won't pay the $90 tech fee. DISH does not have a wait time from getting the plan. That's because you have to keep it for 6 months so DISH is getting some of the $85 reduction of Tech cost back. The current lowest Protection plan cost I believe is $9.99 not $8.99 so you would end up paying $70 ($60 + $10) instead of $90. But you do get those months of protection if anything else needs repair.
If you are in good standing or at least good standing and long time customer it is likely if you get the protection plan they will waive the $10 fee. Some may have had the $90 fee waived but I would not count on that, of course never hurts to ask. I would lead with that, and if no luck then ask will waive the $10 fee if you get the protection plan.

I don't know if being under contract lessens the chance of getting them to drop fees or not.

Also, if you immediately drop the plan when done with it, you would only pay the pro-rated amount for the time you had the plan plus a $30 (I think) early termination fee. So, if you're just trying to save on the $95 tech visit, it could cost you under $35.

This is now the wording,
Existing DISH Subscribers: If You cancel this Plan within [180] days of purchase of this Plan, the Purchase Price paid by You is fully earned, You will not receive a refund or credit, and You will be charged a cancellation fee of [$30.00], where allowed by law.
If You cancel this Plan after [180] days of purchase of this Plan, the Purchase Price paid by You is fully earned, You will not receive a refund or credit, and You will not be charged a cancellation fee.

Ok, so you would be charged a full month regardless of how much of that month you have it. So the lowest outlay for the PP is $40.

Everything is prorated. If you added it for a day and removed it, you would be charged accordingly for that day that you have it as well as a $30 cancellation fee if you remove it.
It's already been established in this thread that is not how it's worded. If you used the protection plan for a day, you'd have to pay for the entire month (plus the cancellation fee).

Yeah, the wording is a little tricky. I went to mydish.com and pulled up the plan details and here is exactly what it says.

Can this Plan be cancelled? You may cancel this Plan at any time by calling [1-800-333-DISH (3474)].
New DISH Subscribers: If You cancel this Plan within the first [180] days after activation of Your DISH Network account, You will not be charged the Purchase Price and any applicable new subscriber credits for the Plan will end. If You cancel after [180] days of activation of Your DISH Network account, the Purchase Price paid by You is fully earned and You will not receive a refund or credit.

They would with the Protection Plan. It would then be considered leased.
With the Protection Plan, the replacement would still be considered owned. That is especially true in this case, since the owned unit is a second Hopper 3, which is required to be owned. (There is no way to put two leased Hopper 3's on the same account.)
