I keep getting Charter/Spectrum cable service reps BANGING on my door! I have patiently told them before that I CANNOT change my Directv service BECAUSE I use it at both my home AND camper - and THEY have no comparable service!

My question to you experts is: do you ever see Directv somehow "taking away" the flexibility current subscribers like me have - which now essentially 'locks' us into staying with Directv (or some other Satellite service)??

What kind of dish & receiver(s) do you have in your RV? Directv is making some changes next year that will obsolete all SD only receivers and limit the usefulness of the 18" round dish. So if that's what you have and can't/won't upgrade to a Slimline that might end your "lock-in" with Directv...

DISH actually has loosened their rules for camper use, though it has to be certain receivers so I doubt Directv would go the opposite way. They may through upgrades require you to use different equipment but the use of Campers should remain.

I think I'm good there. Have a SL5 at both locations and all HD receivers as of this year now.

DirecTV pushes a pretty addictive drug. Had me on the hook for 21yrs. Tried many times to get clean but failed. Once Sat and Now blend recovery will be hopeless.

Nope. Why would they give up one of their benefits. :)

They kinda of already ARE...since D* does NOT allow ANY standalone receivers (which one would normally use to camp/tailgate) to be put on the same account with a Genie 2...which is what they're pushing now... ;)

Spectrum really isn’t a bad deal if you take the camper benefit out of the equation.

With streaming becoming more of the norm with cellular coverage being Just about everywhere. It might more sense to actually switch and find a streaming solution for the camper for the few times per year you use it

Only because they are bleeding customers as it is.

The second home and camper people are pretty much customers for life

No one says you HAVE to get a HS17 .... get a HR54 instead.

We all understand that here..but you DO actually realize that most people (ie: people that DON'T go on boards like these...) that want to sign up for D* &/or upgrade their (very) old equipment, have NO clue about these types of stupid restrictions by (both) satellite providers...until AFTER the equipment is installed & then they go to try adding on an additional receiver, only to be told no. You know as well as I do, that D* is NOT then going to do a (free) Genie swap, just so someone can add another (full) receiver for camping, etc.
Also, since D* is not making older Genie receivers anymore, what would you suggest then, when those are all gone...& the ONLY DVR's available, are the Genie 2's??? (I suppose D* could possibly acquiesce & change their mind on this...but sorry, I just don't see that...)

I stand by my statement...this has NEVER been a problem on D*, until AT&T decided to put this dumb-f#^k restriction on Genie 2 accounts...

Again, why blame ATT ?
This rules is not anything new, its been there all along.
That was a D* call, not an ATT call.

Are you 100% sure about that; I thought the Genie 2 did NOT come out until after AT&T took over. And (again) there had NEVER been ANY restrictions on adding standalone receivers to ANY account, until the introduction of the Genie 2.

BUT WHOEVER put it on...it's still stupid as f&*k. OK, NOW AT&T owns it, they can just as easily change the rule. (well, we ALL know NOTHING is "easy" in AT&T land...but again, whatev/whoev, did it/owns it... )

Your not allowed more than 1 Genie1 per account either ....

I don’t get what the issue is. We should be allowed as many genies as we want
That would be nice, but you know there was issues when they had select people trying more than one on an account.

It would be nice as I could put 1 in the motorhome and leave the one in the home (already there).
This way I would have a more current unit for the MH vs the HR24

Well aware of that & understand that limitation (that Claude already mentioned)...& this has anything to do with my original point of standalone receivers, how???

What about my point that (if) the Genie 2 came out AFTER AT&T took over & what subs are supposed to do when they are the ONLY DVR model available...any answers on that???

Just be careful about what kind of (new) equipment you might decide to upgrade to in the future; better double-check that you are NOT forced to remove certain existing receivers from your account that you take to travel with. ;)

Its quite simple (AS YOU KNOW) I know ....
Don't get a HS17 (Genie2) and your fine, you can have all the recvrs you want ... as its been since the HR34's came out (Way before ATT took over).
You do NOT have to upgrade to the Genie2 ... you Can get new service with a Genie HR44/54 ... and have as many recvr you want that can work in the camper/tailgate set up.
There is nothing saying you have to go to the HS17 ... Yes, they are pushing them as thats the way its leaning in the future.
For the typical New sub, they know no difference between the two set ups, all they want it working TV.
Therefore, for the New subs, the HS17 works fine.

For those of you that have more complicated situations like you with Camping/ Tailgating or Me with the Motor Home or the Cottage situation, thats different, where it would do you good to investigate ahead of time and know what you need to set up the different situations.
