You said it right!
I never thought when AT&T bought Directv that the company would change for the worse or at least be as visible to customers as it has. It’s almost like AT&T tried to dismantle Directv just by buying and then knowing the wanted to go in another direction from the onset.

Don’t they have one pending, waiting to go up? Or are they going to try to sell it or write it off?

In most cases Locals are not offered. This is especially true in rural areas. AT&T never care about rural areas especially when it come to their cell coverage. They say there is no money to be made in these area.

It's evident AT&T is losing money on the investment which makes you really wonder why they made the grab in the first place. They never had any intent to even maintain the business much less grow it and they already had a cable TV company to spin into a streaming service so what was the point? On the other hand it is AT&T and a lot of their business decisions seem to lack a point.

Yes they do have the T16 scheduled for launch I forget when. I used to think that AT&T was signaling they were going to get rid of SatellIteTV right away. However, now I think it will take them awhile to phase it out just like they are taking awhile to phase out UVerseTV. DTV has 20 million subscribers and it will take awhile to get them to DTV over IP or DTV Now. Also the T16 I think they said would have a 10 year life span. AT&T's CEO said they would use SatelliteTV for rural areas for customers that can't get high speed internet. However, I wonder how long that would last if they start deploying 5g in the rural areas?

They bought for the customer base and content. They also said early on they would use the cash flow from DTV to upgrade FTTN to FTTH. UVerse is in only 22 states DTV let AT&T go national with their TV service. ATT couldn't negotiate channel rights for a streaming service with just 6 million UVerseTV customers. They could also get better channel negotiation rights with their regular TV service having 26 million subscribers.
 
In the article he said they’ve already launched their last satellite.

I think AT&T is placing a heavier bet on AirGig than 5G. Both can coexist.

Would AT&T have spent the money on the T16 and just cancel the launch? Or would they be able to sell it to Dish? Also people are reporting AT&T applied for the FCC license for the T16.
 
There's some of us who predicted this very early on. I know I posted it in this forum soon after the takeover and paying attention to the remarks of the CEO. In Ct I knew several people who worked for At&t who were lineman and let go because At&t decided the cost was not worth it and were pulling out of the traditional phone service. (And they did - they left Connecticut)
I'm not even saying At&t is wrong in slowly ending Directv or at least their service of it. Maybe the future is no in home equipment needed, no satellites.

Now, can DISH make inroads? I think there is still a place for satellite for a variety of reasons. Can DISH streamline pricing to better compete with online services? Are there enough customers who are with Directv that still want or need satellite?

What they did is not uncommon in business.

Buy a competitor so you can shut them down.

Then you pick up volume which reduces your costs and can raise prices at the same time.

I looked at the presser. Only 15 percent of their ebita is coming from sat and land video with sat decreasing. So you can understand where they want to spend their time and money.

Meanwhile, they bought a great customer list.

I’m just waiting for T-Mobile to rollout 5G first and start their video service, I like the direction their company is taking under John Legere.

Right now I have DirecTV and att wireless. Which saves me a bunch.

That removes the very thing that makes D* great ... the ability to get D* anywhere (with LOS).
There are tons of areas that don't have the Internet.
 
i really dont want to go back to dish

and i do not see any internet in my area for years

Actually it opens up Directv to customers with LOS or other issues where a satellite dish is impractical
