Dish Network's Charlie ergen in FCC crosshairs over wireless buildout

It appears that Ameristar was not Dish... it sold Dish.

Louisville Times Newspaper Archives, May 22, 1996, p. 28

NOPE not really correct, before anyone knew of Dish before anyone had a Dish account anywhere they where trying to sell it as the second small DBS system after DTV I went to the local meeting I heard the BS, I did not see the name Dish until I took the receiver out of the box

Then since I was selling tracker they had my name and called me asking me if I wanted to be an installer the first dish receivers looked like almost c-band receivers they made me buy my showroom system for $600

I remember it being DISH from the very beginning. We were one of the retailers who gave Charlie $1000 to bring to China with him for the Echostar 1 satellite launch. He brought the first systems back with him for everybody who paid the $1000. The rest came in on a boat a while later.
That came after, the first receiver I had was made in the USA damn it may be in my attic paid $600

Not trying to be funny, but the FIRST time I saw your avatar, I THOUGHT I was seeing a photo shoot of actors from Star Trek TOS... LOL!

Glad I'm NOT wearing a red shirt... hehe.
Well we do all three like Star Trek . My son is the third generation that loves the series, my Dad ,who is 79 loved the original series . I used to watch it with him on our big 20” color tv in the 60s , sitting on the couch with him. I was only 4 to 7 when the show first aired , so Understanding the show didn’t kick in till I was a teenager watching reruns. My wife , a real sci-fi geek , used to attend Star Trek conventions in a Next Generation uniform in the 80s , before we got married in 1994.

Pretty sad when you have to turn to your retailers to help you build out 5G

Hello DISH Retailer,

We are looking for partners to assist in building out our wireless spectrum with a Multichannel Video and Data Distribution Service (MVDDS). The ideal MVDDS build includes 2 sites – an A-Site (transmit) and a B-Site (receive). Both sites would have equipment similar in size to a DBS antenna. The A-Site would require a network cabinet to be installed in a room that has HVAC to maintain suitable operating conditions for electronics.

In order to determine if you have a suitable location, please complete a survey which contains more details on requirements for each location you have here. Once we receive your completed survey, we will follow up within two to three weeks with an update as to whether or not we can use your location(s) for the MVDDS buildout. Please fill out the survey, regardless if you feel you may have a suitable location, as we may have flexibility on some requirements.

This is an exciting opportunity to help build our future together. Thank you for your continued partnership!

Regards,

DISH Specialized Distribution Team

Er...why is this sad? What business wouldn't leverage an existing network of partners (a known quantity) on a new venture rather than starting from scratch with unknowns, especially early on with speed to market being a factor?

I thought folks said Charlie had tower space all lined up for his network. If he did why is he looking for people to host his transmitter sites?

I think it is a good idea.

Anyone willing to break out of the existing paradigm has a chance of creating a new major business.

If he succeeds, a bunch of naysayers will be saying they were early supporters.

If not, he tried

My point was that people were saying Charlie could meet the build out date since he had tower space all lined up. So does he and he’s just looking for more or he really didn’t and now scrambling to find space?

I'd say looking for more space and sites closer together. I read that the site spacing will have to be much smaller for good coverage.
Not sure what frequencies he has but most of the big carrier frequencies have a very limited range, so they will need dense site saturation to make it appear seamless.

What I found interesting is the multivideo. Several years ago their slide shows illustrated several ways they could market their products.
It appear this pitch is for their "one to many" streaming service where the customers can get a "package" stream of content vs something like streaming Netflix where you get a single stream on demand.

It’s a safe bet.
Charlie is not really big enough to compete with those big players. His empire is a mom and pop hardware store compared to the mega media providers. He may be smart enough to get in but it won't be easy and the big boys proba ly do not want him in the race. I look for dish to disappear one day like c band. With the long history of disputes with channel owners Nd dwindling subscribers. I am seeing C band subscription demise written on the wall with its name changed to small dish.
Constant price increases (you c band guys remember this), losing channels (HBO Max) .

I'd need to see more detail on how their buildout is supposed to work. What is described in the message Claude shared does not match any typical wireless buildout I am currently familiar with, aside from microwave backhaul. The fact that it sounds very different suggests to me Dish is trying to do it differently and that makes me think there is at least a chance for some market disruption there as a result, but that can be a risky game, especially when it comes to EM-based products. It should be interesting to watch at least, should we ever get any details.

Because they are going to exploit the retailers.

Roof top space for cell towers for example go for over $1000 per month.

The fact of the matter is that they are looking at some a$$ kissing local retailer who thinks that by allowing dish to install their equipment on their building they are going to give them some preferred treatment or exclusive rights to sell 5g in their area if it’s ever launched.

I would like to see what they are offering to pay for the facilities. I bet it’s a few hundred dollars and free internet.

Dish may also be trying to just get signed leases to show to the FCC.

Any other place is going to sign a lease and want to start getting paid immediately. The retailers they could sign the leases with and hold off paying toll equipment is installed.

If I was selling Dish I would probably be more than happy and even excited for them to install their garbage of my roof. Now that I have been away from them for 7 years, I see right through this ploy to desperately come up with a plan to show to the FCC to keep their billions in spectrum they paid for and did nothing with.

I’m going to make a prediction that In the next 6 months if they don’t get the ball rolling on their wireless buildout, Dish will be put up for sale and sold.

The video business is dying, so Charlie is unlikely to keep Dish and allow someone to buy just the spectrum. It will be a package deal.

Without reliable internet, Dish is dead. They cannot be in business just serving the under served areas in rural America where there is no internet.

Just the subscriber numbers prove it, 20% is sling customers.

I think you make a good point. Also the big players such as sprint, AT&T and Verizon are not going to let Charlie play in their sandbox without resistance.

I know Charlie doesn’t get along with AT$T And sprint after the SoftBank thing and Directv merger

I am a fan of dish . But I am starting to think that Claude is right. I bought a lot of dish stock and it is falling through the floor. Sold it all and bought some oil stock at a low and at least I recouped my loss.

Well, you and I may disagree about the Dish and AT&T dispute about HBO and Cinemax, but we agree about the 5G build out.

I agree with you on the Internet play. However, I think your history with Dish colors your perception of this particular message. It is too soon to tell. Once we know what they are offering, as you say, then we can say whether or not it is sad.
