And why won’t Apple sell a direct USB to USB-C charging cable, instead of a kludge? Just sent me to after marketers.

Still, a great product, but I honestly doubt I’ll spend this much on a phone again.

What would that be for? Charge a Samsung phone? :) I have a USB C to Lightning cable but I just use the wireless chargers now. Much easier. Even my power bank has a wireless charging coil in it. I only use the USB to Lightning cable now to to quickly transfer my video and image files to the PC for editing.

As more and more part of people's lives are on the smart phone, we will need more robust hardware to handle it. I am very glad I got the iphone XS Max with plenty of memory. While I never really could use the old 6+ for any video work and rarely used it to shoot video. The new XS Max can easily handle 5.7K 30 fps VR files and editing on the fly with very fast rendering, image stabilization, color grading, and special effects in record time. I work with others using the same VR camera to import and edit video using the older iphone 7 and they have crashes and freeze ups all the time. It all depends on what you want to do with the iphone whether you will need to spend for it. Some people just talk, others text and talk, still others surf and take a few pictures. They don't need the top device. I wanted to do much more so the new XS Max has performed amazingly well. It shoots a better image than the GoPro Hero 7 ! Since getting the XS Max I have used it for 10 times as much as before. I would say I rarely use the ipad anymore.

The new piggyback battery for $129 is rather expensive given the competitors are much less but some people will buy them because they have 4-8 hours a screen time a day with full screen brightness and don't trust 3rd party for their Apple devices. My daughter's MIL is like that. I've seen people living on their iphones all day constantly seeking a place to plug in to get a little more time. Most of the time I have my phone in the belt holster and it is receiving emails and messages but I view these on my watch. I rarely take the phone out. My battery lasts 4-5 days. However, if I decide to shoot a long form program with the phone it can burn up a days worth of charge in 30 minutes. Doing that editing of large video files can do the same so I would usually do that on charge.

No, I was extending it to the new iPads with USB-C instead of lightening ports.

Apple does sell USB cables with USB-C connectors on both ends, if you want to pay the Apple Tax.

Standard USB on one end, to plug into PCs, chargers and autos. USB-C at the other

Apple now uses USB-C for its serial ports on quite a few of its products. Ecosystem schmecosystem.

Interesting. I have a USB C to Lightning for rapid charging my XS Max but hardly ever use it. The power pack is 29 watts. BTW- I never buy this stuff from Apple as they are typically way over priced. I did buy all my watch chargers from Apple as they are not standard. The only knockoff I tried was a keyring powerbank for the Apple watch. Wife and I both carry them. But the corded magnetic charger for the watch that is a knockoff works but is slower charging and bigger diameter and twice as thick. It wasn't that much cheaper either.

Lightning seems to be limited to about 1.8 amps so with devices that have larger batteries, USB-C was the next logical step. Perhaps not obviously, USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 use the same connector but the support hardware isn't particularly compatible and Thunderbolt 3 has rather extensive interfacing requirements so interchangeability is far from direct.

Since Apple is the odd man out, I blame Apple for confusion and expense that wouldn't otherwise exist.

I've seen Thunderbolt 3 used on Windows machines as well as the latest Macintosh hardware, so I'm counting that as a plus. Why Thunderbolt went with the UCB Type-C connector is confusing, but I guess as long as every USB-C connector is also Thunderbolt 3 it isn't a problem, except when you're talking non-intel hardware, in which case it's just a USB-C port without Thunderbolt 3.

:what Confused yet?o_O

I have a Thunderbolt card in my newest computer. Came with it but I didn't order it in my build, (custom barebones build by Velocity Micro) I don't even know what to use it for.

Of course every USB-C connector isn't Thunderbolt 3 -- not even in the domain of Apple products. That would be too easy.

Because Apple decided that monitors should be serially connected, they had to maintain Thunderbolt compatibility so people wouldn't lose the value of their overpriced Apple monitors. You just have to make sure you use an appropriately marked port. You can identify which is which on an Apple device by the icon next to the port. If it is Thunderbolt 3, there will be a thunderbolt icon. If it is USB-C only, there will be a USB icon (the warped trident). If it isn't marked (or it is just too small to see), your on your own.

So my wife is now an Apple Series 4 owner, do any of the other series 4 owners have any online resources for a quick introduction on getting to know your Apple Watch? My son tried to show her a few things, and she's left-handed but has always worn a watch on her left wrist. I like how the UI can be configured to left or right side, and digital crown on the left or right as well.

I'm glad I picked the one with the Pink Sand strap as it's a lot easier to get on and off compared to the elastomeric band with its holes and post. Looks a lot better, too. I guess it's time to check out the ?Watch bands on Amazon to find a gold-tone metal band.

Apple has put several short Apple Watch tutorials on YouTube in the past. You can check out several reviews on there. Some go into good detail.

If she is going to do a lot of exercise wearing the watch, the elastometric Nike bands are the best there are. They breathe so much better than the sports ban.

Anyone notice the latest update helped make the watch4 battery last longer? I was getting consistently 40 hours from 100% to 10% with 4 hours on the charger. Since the latest update I now get 66 hours with 4 on the charger. Still not as good as my older watch watch 3 which did 70 hours plus 4 on charge cycle.

Depends on what sort of information you like to get where you would need to pull your iphone out. Most of this info can be set up on the watch as a "complication." ) a dial face quick access.. I set up several watch faces so I can hahe many of my apps data at a glance.

My main one has one of my stock portfolio investments streamed during the trading day, another is the weather, calendar events, activity rings, heart rate, battery %, & alarm clock. Pull down email, text messages and news. Another has my phone and address book, and text messages. Another has quick access to exercise workout and the EKG, with heart rate, and stop watch, Another watch face similar to the first one but replaces the stock quotes with two quick calling to my wife or daughter. Plus calendar, workout battery%, weather. Another has quick access to my location on a map, currency exchange calculator, voice recorder, and a voice language translator.

While you can surf the web on the watch, I don't find that practical but I do read and respond to text messages and read emails all the time with the watch.

I didn't like the included watch band so I ordered a replacement.
