1. Is there any way to program a Genie remote to control TV volume/power without a Genie to program it with? (IE use the buttons on the remote to program it).

2. How many HR24 HD-DVR's will DirecTV allow on one account?

3. Can a H24 view content off a HR24?

4. Is the $15 Advanced Receiver-DVR fee in addition to or in lieu of the $10 Advanced Receiver-HD fee?

Remember, if eventually you upgrade to the Genie2 (HS17), you can't use other recvrs, everything has to change over to clients.

Ya, I have no plans to ever upgrade to a Genie system. I want every room to be 100% independent.

I assume you can program the remote without a genie, check Directv.com to find the codes to use. Yes, with whole home an H24 can view what's on an HR24. If you have the $15 receiver/dvr fee, it's separate from the hd fee. Some pay one $25 fee that includes both.
 
There is no limit to the number of HR24s you can get, but people who have a lot report that once you get more than 10 the whole home network isn't stable - individual DVRs will randomly drop off and become invisible to the others.

Other than that AFAIK there is no limit to how many receivers or DVRs Directv will let you have, though pretty sure the terms of service gives them the right to audit your account - that is to show up and verify everything really is all at one location. They'd probably get suspicious if someone who lives in a 1200 sq ft house had 20 receivers :)

Ah nothing like those numbers, I was thinking there might be a 2 DVR limit or something low like that. I have 3 HD receivers and would like to replace them with 3 HD-DVR's if I can get them all free. Right now the website is offering me 1 HD-DVR free...

I seriously doubt you will get more than the one for free. Most have to pay to get just that one. Count your blessings!

So it's the norm to never get a equipment upgrade in 10 years? I had to pay $99 for the HD Receiver in 2010. Bought it from SolidSignal. If I cancel at the end of the contract how long do I have to wait to be a new customer just to get new equipment? I don't understand why these companies give new customers all the great stuff then 22 year customers have to pay to get any new equipment. If I hadn't paid $99 for the HD Receiver I'd still be using the free D11 that I got when getting service pre-HD.

Interesting considering:
Genie HD DVR = $299 + Genie Mini $99 x 2 for 3 rooms total = $497
Regular HD DVR = $199 + HD Receiver $99 x 2 for 3 rooms total = $397
Regular HD DVR = $199 x 2 + HD Receiver $99 for 3 rooms total = $497

Which remote are you talking about??? The larger, white remote, or the smaller black & white remote???

If it's a white remote, I KNOW you can do those without going thru the receiver(s), as that's how I do those quite a bit; here's some comprehensive guide books for those, complete with TV & other device codes:

There doesn't appear to be such a guide for the black & white remotes...but maybe someone else knows different. (another reason why I try to avoid those at all costs :eek: )

Yeah, me too. I do everything with my RC65 Directv remote including watching Netflix/Amazon, use the TV, use the radio in the AVR, and it can do more. The new one is basically worthless. And it clicks!

Personally, I'd contact them, let them know your a long time sub and tell them your considering upgrading and what do they have to offer ... and see what they say, before you go out and buy stuff. or leave for elsewhere ...
Get ahold of the Retention/Loyalty dept ... make sure its them and not just the CSR dept.

See what they say and go from there.

Yes, the Peanut version, doesn't do nearly as much as the older white ones.
 
When I was working with a client & the D* tech that was adding another receiver awhile back, the tech had BOTH kinds of remotes on his truck. While I, of course, insisted for a white remote for the new receiver, he did mention that when he does receiver upgrades/additions for subs, if they already have white remotes, any remotes for new/upgraded receivers also get white remotes...since existing subs that already have them, would most likely NOT like the newer remotes at all - to which I totally agreed with him on! If a (new) sub specifically asks for white remotes, he'll give them those kind of remotes as well.
 
You should be able to get an upgrade to a Genie for free. You can leave the receivers as is or replace them with clients. Either way you can watch recordings off the Genie from any TV so it functionally it is the same thing as having three DVRs. The only difference would be that if the Genie craps out you lose all your recordings, where if you have three DVRs you'd lose only the recordings on the one that failed. I would guess that since you don't have any DVR currently you are primarily concerned with gaining the ability to set/watch recordings from any TV.

The reason Directv won't let you replace them all for free is that they usually give one free upgrade every two years - in exchange for a two year commitment. If you've been a customer for many years and never upgraded they probably aren't going to let you get multiple upgrades you are "owed" but I suppose it can never hurt to ask.

A) $25 advanced service fee. You do not pay for the first receiver

B) $10 DVR FEE, $10 HD Access fee, $3 Whole home DVR FEE. TOTAL $23

C) $15 advance receiver services fee. You also pay $7 for the first receiver. Total $22.

D) You have an all in 1 package pricing which includes the DVR FEE, HD, while home DVR, and the first receiver fee. Some of these packages can include 2 or 4 receiver fees.

Press mute and select and enter the code on the white peanut remotes.

Google “directv remote code lookup”

Although I see the reasoning, it’s really stupid for the advanced consumer that none of those remotes have a Tv input button.

Tv power on and volume is really all you need, but the fact that no other functions are available are probably due to the fact it just causes un necessary service calls.

Can’t tell you how many calls I used to get for the Tv not being on channel 3 or the correct input. When the remotes had the slider to control the Tv, can’t tell you how many times people would slide it to “tv” and change the channel and all they would get was snow.

Dish tried to rectify this problem by adding a “recover” button to the remotes, but none of the installers wanted to be bothered to try to program it.

Can’t tell you how many times when I was in a customers house and was hoping their piece of sh*t Tv would program to the satellite remote control
