Alliance of American Football

This might be a fun league ....

Are they using NFL rules or College rules or thier own ?

Home teams listed 1st ?
Isn't that a$$ backwards ?
Have they listed times for the games yet ?

I see that the NFL is actually allowing an AAF commercial during the Super Bowl telecast. I think it is possible that this league will manage to function as an informal development league for the NFL.

I am surprised thatt hey could not come to terms with St. Louis for a team but the list of cities looks like it could be viable. In fact unless they want tog o head to head I think the XXL will be hard pressed to come up with an equally good list of cities.
I see the NFL must be all for this "Other " league, seeing the NFL Network is a broadcast partner with them.

Teams will have 52 players on each roster, with some selected by a territorial draft. The territory assigned to a team consists of at least five colleges plus designated professional teams, one Canadian Football League, and four NFL teams, for those from Big Ten and the Big 12 conferences. Only one quarterback can be taken from their region. A quarterbacks-only "Protect or Pick" draft was conducted in November 2018 in which teams may retain their allocated quarterback or select an unprotected quarterback from another team.

Telecasts will feature no television timeouts and 60 percent fewer commercials, with the league aiming for an approximate real-time game length of 150 minutes, down from just over 180 in the NFL.

All teams must attempt two-point conversions after each touchdown; there will be no extra point kicks.

There will be no kickoffs; halves, odd overtime periods and after scores will begin on each team's own 25-yard line, the same as touchbacks in the NFL and NCAA. In lieu of an onside kick, a team can keep possession of the ball by attempting a scrimmage play from their own 35-yard line and gaining at least 12 yards.

The play clock will run only 30 seconds, 10 seconds shorter than in the NFL.

Two coach's challenges per team are the only replays; no challenges in last two minutes of either half nor any overtime period, as they are automatic.

Outside organizations will handle head-safety protocols.

Playoffs will consist of four teams, the top two teams from each conference.

The Atlanta team is playing at Georgia State (old Turner Field), so I might check out one of their games. Especially with Aaron Murray being the quarterback.

Looking forward to giving it a shot this weekend. Looks like games on Saturday and Sunday

AAF will have a Sky Judge.

Alliance of American Football

The AAF will have a ninth member of the officiating crew, called a sky judge who will be in the press box and can instantly correct "obvious and egregious" officiating errors. The sky judge will use real-time technology to correct clear errors involving player safety anytime during a game and pass interference inside of five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“If you get a helmet-to-helmet spear and it’s not called on the field, it can be picked up by the ninth official,” Mike Pereira, the NFL’s former vice president of officiating who is a consultant to the AAF, told the Associated Press. “He has the ability to do it in real time. It doesn’t go to replay. ... He can call down to the field and say, ‘Hey, spearing on No. 33 of Birmingham, 15-yard penalty, let’s go.’

Illegal defense though? Sounds like a Pro Bowl rule.

On defense, no more than five players may rush on passing plays. No defensive player may rush from a position of more than two yards outside the widest offensive lineman and more than five yards from the line of scrimmage. The exceptions would be play-action or run-pass option plays and if the ball leaves the tackle box.

There will be a 15-yard penalty for "illegal defense."

Michael Vick didn't last long as the Atlanta Legends (I really hate that name) offensive coordinator.

Michael Vick won’t be calling plays for the Atlanta Legends after all.

The former Falcons quarterback will not serve as the team’s offensive coordinator as the entry in the new Alliance of American Football league gets underway this week. The team announced Vick as the offensive coordinator last year and ran radio ads this week touting his role with the team.

The team also lost Brad Childress as head coach in January.

New coach Kevin Coyle addressed the Vick situation Thursday in advance of the season opener Saturday at Orlando. It appears Vick will remain with the organization in a consulting role.

As long as it doesn't compete with them, they probably see no harm. Not sure if they'll try and make it their "minor league" at some point or is there where former NFL players go ?

I remember hearing a story about how Roger Goodell wants to get the NFL as much exposure as possible. Started with adding Thursday Night Football. Then came the occasional games in London which on those Sundays, you have games going from 9-10am (EST) until 10-11pm (EST) - NFL football all day long.

Had better ratings than the NBA last night.

The XFL had great ratings the first week too----and then ratings and attendance starteda steep decline. I hope this works but it is too early to draw any conclusions.

Premere looky-loos are reason for
1st week numbers.

I liked the rules/format and quick gameplay.

The quality of play was terrible.
Hopefully that comes around with time.
These guys have not had much practice/play time together.

TV camera views of mostly empty stadiums not gonna be helpful.
They need to rethink ticket prices.
If I see lots of empty seats on TV,
I'm not gonna be in a hurry to spend $$$ on tickets.
Even give away tickets to fill seats...
Wounded Warriors and such...
Then gradually reduce the # of giveways
As more seats are sold.

I definitely noticed that it moved along quicker. I can't stand watching NFL games on TV anymore. It's laughable if you go to a game in person. The teams/players stand around constantly waiting for the TV commercials to get done !

Does the NFL have a rule about a player leaving the field for one play if their helmet comes off or is that NCAA only ? The game I watched had it happen (to the QB) and he stayed in. I thought this league used almost all of the same rules as the NFL. I can't believe any that they'd skip would be safety related though.

XFL was a comedy show though. Was largely unsustainable.

The point was that premiere week numbers are not necessarily indicative of where things will wind up. I suspect ratings wil decline and then hopefully risea bit. we will see though.

Affordable Football

If tickets were 'priced right'
The stadiums would not be so sparsely populated.
