The OFFICIAL DISH / HBO Thread

Could careless, and likely won’t resubscribe if it ever did come back. It’s no longer the hbo I grew up with. My dad and I caught every boxing match on hbo, we loved their coverage, and now it’s gone forever. The quality programming you couldn’t wait for, will soon be phased out and replaced with a hundred or so generic, yet somehow quirky, dramedies. It’ll become a disorganized Netflix, signing a check to any two bit hack producer, with a live channel on a handful of carriers. Then in a couple years, like Netflix, they’ll start to lose third party studio support. 20th century fox’s library will likely only be accessible on Disney’s streaming app, and Comcast will likely use universals library as a bargaining chip during negotiations, leaving just the few movies the new warner media produces.

Yeah if Charlie anticipated a mass exodus of Dish for DirecTV because of HBO, he wouldn't be saying no to them. ......

Exactly how it went with the NY RSN's. And he said so at the time, for the very high price they were asking and the relatively few subscribers DISH would lose they chose not to carry them and do not to this day. I don't equate HBO quite in the same way but the principle is probably the same. (Because HBO I bet depending on what original shows are on at the time may have some upswings in subscriptions, that isn't possible with the NY RSN's.) Given what At&t/HBO is asking whatever that is, it would seem DISH doesn't feel the cost is worse than the subs they may lose. If HBO had not created an online standalone service we might not be here now.

Which carriers have the live Netflix channel? Perhaps Dish should add that as a replacement for HBO. Dish already has the Netflix app on channel 302, in the HBO range. A linear Netflix channel would be good for those who do not have a good enough internet connection to be able to use the app.

2.5 million is a huge chunk of the subscriber base and probably made up of the higher spenders as well. I guess there are some with the Welcome Pack and HBO, but probably not many!

I do/did. Not enough on regular "cable" to justify us paying for anything more than Welcome Pack, plus the occasional premium channel.

I probably would not have subscribed to HBO via streaming if it wasn't for the factor of getting Real Time and HBO on demand via the Roku/firestick. Other than that I would not have. Sometimes I question the on demand part as I get Prime.

We liked GOT a lot more the first few years than we do now. The long gaps between seasons was the principle reason. We already talked about it here and we can wait to see it later.

I'd sooner wait till the season is over and watch it all at once. Not just for GOT but any series, forget too much between seasons and for that matter week to week.

Yep, it looks like Dish is giving up the fight: HBO Now Alternative Viewing | MyDISH | DISH Customer Support

It would be nice if the Hopper could have the Now app built in so it was even easier to use.
Awwww.... I was hoping they'd put an app on the Hopper. Oh well, IF I decide to get it I'll put it on the Roku. At this point my wife and I are so far behind we probably won't even. You all know how much content there actually is now. It's almost endless.

Why would Dish promote HBO as an app? Kind of defeats the purpose?. Dish is probably only advertising this on their site for potential clients and customers wanting HBO, I guess also because the customer service dept is getting more than the usual number of calls about HBO???

I think it means HBO is gone for good and they're trying to mitigate the damage.

Something I saw just before I opened this thread. I have a Hulu account and had to go to my account page. I buy the $5.99 plan (almost never use it so don't feel like getting their commercial free version) and saw where I could add HBO for the proverbial $15. Came here and saw the announcement and went to Dish's page. Saw that they didn't mention Hulu as an option.

I'm guessing they are all the same 'HBO Now' app, so I plan to add the one from my 4K Firestick when GoT starts. Anyone think that an app through Hulu or somewhere else would be better?

It is good customer service. Dish doesn't have HBO, but it knows ~2.5 million of their subscribers wanted it before the dispute, so it is telling those people about alternatives.
