Thinking about joining HBO soon. We are Amazon Prime members and want all HBO TV live shows just like we had with our DISH Hopper if there is such a thing. When I check my Amazon Prime account it says HBO Go and HBO Now are free download apps. Which one should I get for all live TV programs or is there another HBO app version I should get? Why are they free? I thought you have to pay $15.00 for the HBO app. Also, there is a choice to download to my 4K Fire Stick or the Cloud. Which one should I do? If I want to watch HBO thru my LG TV Amazon Prime Video app, will it work or do I have to always use the Fire Stick HBO app? Sorry if all my questions have already been covered someplace else. I am still learning all this streaming stuff. Thanks for any help.

The app is free, you have to pay for the service. If you want live, sub through Prime. As a positive thing when you do that you also get access to HBO Now. Once you do that you will have access via any device that has Prime on it, your Firestick or you LG.

Thanks Bobby. So which is the best app to get, Go or Now? Or can you download both apps? I don't see where to sub for live through Prime or does it show up after you download the GO or Now app? Should the download go to the Fire Stick or the Cloud?

Neither! You want to get HBO directly through Amazon Prime Channels. This will give you access to HBO through the Amazon APP on devices. This will also give you the live channels as well as all the rest of the stuff using the Prime App. After you do this then you can put HBONOW on whatever other devices that you have if you want to do that.
I did the above on my ATV4K. I can access HBO through the Amazon Prime app channels for live HBO or anything else. I also installed the HBONOW app and can use that if I want but other than testing I do not use that.

Currently I am subscribed to HBO NOW and am also an Amazon Prime member. Subscribed to NOW for the GoT then plan on dropping subscription, since a perk is you can drop it anytime. Is this the same if one subscribed through AP? Can you drop it anytime?

OK, thanks ggw2000. I just found this in Amazon site. Helps clear up things too for me.

What are Prime Video Channel Subscriptions?

Amazon Prime and Prime Video members can purchase third-party channel subscriptions (like Showtime, Starz) and other streaming entertainment channels directly through Prime Video.

Channel subscriptions from Prime Video are paid monthly subscriptions to third-party premium networks and other streaming entertainment channels. Eligible Prime members have the option to purchase these subscriptions directly through Prime Video.

All of the movies and TV programming included with the subscription are then available to watch on demand, on all compatible Prime Video devices.

Tip: Prime Video is available on hundreds of devices—including TVs, Blu-ray players, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Fire tablets, computers, and Android and iOS mobile devices. To learn more about ways to watch, go to Get Prime Video.

Requirements

To start Channel subscriptions through Prime Video, you need an eligible Prime membership. You're eligible if you have any one of the following membership types:

· Amazon Prime membership
· 30-day Amazon Prime free trial
· Annual Prime Student membership
· Prime Student free trial
· Amazon Prime Free Preview
· Amazon Prime Fresh
· 30-day Amazon Prime Fresh free trial
· Amazon Household shared Prime benefits

Access to Channel subscriptions is not included if you were previously invited to share shipping benefits with a Prime member. To learn more about Prime memberships, go to Amazon Prime.

Note:

· Channel subscriptions can't be shared across Amazon accounts or Amazon Household profiles. For more information, go to How to Manage Your Prime Video Channel Subscriptions.
· Channel subscriptions may be subject to sales tax in some states.
· Channel subscriptions don't have any setup or cancellation fees, nor do they have a minimum duration—as long as you're an eligible Prime member, you can start and cancel them at any time.
· Premium channel subscriptions you have with your cable or satellite provider, and standalone subscriptions you've purchased directly from the subscription provider are separate services, and cannot be used with Prime Video. For more information, go to Accessing Subscriptions from Other Providers & Apps.

Find Channels

When browsing Prime Video, look for the Channel categories and filters.
If you select a specific movie or TV show, the video details also include available Channel offers alongside other purchase and viewing options.

Subscribe & Watch
When you've found a Channel you're interested in, select the Subscribe and Watch, Get Started, or Start Free Trial option.

Most Channels start with a free trial; the regular subscription period begins automatically as soon as the trial is over.

Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm your subscription details and complete signup.

Note: Some Prime Video devices don't currently support subscription signup, and prompt you to get started on the Amazon website instead. You're also prompted to sign up on the website if you receive shared Prime benefits through an Amazon Household. To find and start Channel subscriptions from the Amazon website, go to: Prime Video Channels Subscriptions

After you've started a Channel subscription, you can watch the movies and TV programming included with it on all your compatible Prime Video devices. Just open Prime Video, and look for Your Subscriptions.

Most third-party channels also feature live streaming, which gives you the option to watch programming on supported devices the same time as the TV broadcast.

Channels subscriptions charge to your Prime membership payment method each month on the renewal date by default. You can view or change your Channel settings from the Manage Your Prime Video Channels page in Your Account. To learn more, go to How to Manage Your Prime Video Channel Subscriptions.

Thanks Charles! Part of your post answered my question.
Welcome. It all has been confusing to me. I think I will try HBO out for a month to make sure I have it all figured out before the wife watches her favorite program. Yesterday finally got my Ring doorbell camera to work on my TV thru Alexa. That was lots of fun to set up! :coco

I dropped HBO from my Dish service last year.

Knowing I wanted to watch Game of Thrones when it returned this year, I bought some $25 HBO NOW gift cards for $15 when Best Buy had them on sale on Black Friday.

I signed up for a free week of HBO NOW service last week to watch the first episode. I redeemed one of the $25 gift cards this morning and now I'm paid for service through 6/8/19.

You not only get the rest of GoT, but the Deadwood movie as well!

My wife won a HBO Now gift card in a raffle. Pretty strange, you can't use the card on an active subscription. HBO Now has a 7 day free trial, so thinking I'd lose that if I entered the giftcard info first I just took the trial. Then 2 days before the trial ended I tried to add the card to the account. "You can not use a giftcard if your HBO Now is billed by HBO directly". Huh?

Had to wait until the trial expired, then it would let me add the card to the account.
