i think it was nick at night....but I remember when Nickelodeon was on during the day and Arts (now a&e) was on at night

Origionally yes. But I believe they started calling it TVLand right before the separate TVLand channel came to be...

I remember when Nick Jr, Nick, and TVLand were ALL ONE CHANNEL, depending on the time of day determined which channel it was...

Nick Jr and Nick At Nite were/are programming blocks on Nickelodeon. TV Land was created as a 24 hour Nick at Nite spinoff in the mid '90s. On weekdays In the '90s, Nick Jr ran from 7 or 8 AM to 3PM, 3PM to 8 PM was regular Nickelodeon, 8PM and later was Nick at Nite and I think continued into the late night/early morning hours. I vaguely remember a block called Nick at Nite Overnight, which featured less popular classic TV shows and episodes of shows that were no longer in regular rotation in the early morning. In the summer months Nick at Nite had what they called The Block Party Summer. Marathons each night of the week. Munster Mondays, Lucy Tuesdays, Bewitched BeWednesdays, Jeanie Thursdays and Welcome Back Kotter Fridays. As a kid I remember watching Nick before getting on the school bus early in the morning, it was repeats of Nick News W5 and The Adventures of Tintin before Nick Jr started for the day.

The dedicated Nick Jr channel started as Noggin in 1999, Dish Network was the only MSO to have the channel at launch. It was a partnership between CTW and Viacom featuring PBS shows targeted towards older kids (3-2-1 Contact, Ghostwriter) and original Nickelodeon shows that aired on the Nick Jr block in the past targeting preschoolers (Blue's Clues, Gullah Gullah Island). Noggin then later split into two programming blocks, Noggin for young kids, The N for teenagers. The N relaunched as Teennick and took over the old Nick GAS channel and Noggin became Nick Jr.

I remember this all too well, long before there was a nick@nite, TV Land, etc. But the ONLY thing that Nickelodeon & Arts had in common, was that they shared the same satellite x-ponder. (keep in mind this was before satellite channels started scrambling their signals) And because they were completely separate cable channels, each cable system HAD to have a separate contract to carry each service. While most cable systems back then DID carry both service, I had the misfortune to be on a TCI cable system when I was going to college at SIU-C in the mid 80's. The last year I was down there, the entire system had been rebuilt & expanded their channel lineup. (before the rebuild, the ONLY cable channels they carried, was ESPN part-time on their public access channel, plus HBO & Disney pay channels! :coco ) After they added the new channels, per the attached lineup card I still have, we were able to see both Nickelodeon & Arts, like most other viewers did. UNFORTUNATELY, about a month into this, TCI, without any warning, started cutting off A&E when the prog switched to them; they didn't even put up a message, test pattern, etc...all they did was literally kill the ch 2 modulator it was on, so that the channel turned into snow! Of course, when myself & others called TCI to see what gives, they told everyone TCI did NOT have a contract to carry Arts & it was their error to have let it be broadcast in the first place. I was bummed when that happened...but at least our system up here DID carry it, so I could record shows on our VCR's up here & take the tapes back down to watch when I would visit home. :amen
