My 84 year old father still has/uses 2 512 receivers. He recently got a nice HD TV so, I was considering getting him a 612 to go with that TV. If the 512s are working fine would it be as simple as swapping out the receivers or would anything need to be changed at the Dish for the 612? Thanks!

I am not sure Dish will authorize the activation of a 612 on an account at this time.

These receivers are more than 10 years old and a more modern receiver would be better, possibly a Wally.

In order for your father to receive HDTV a new dish will be necessary even if the 612 is activated on his account,

He probably has a legacy single or dual lnb dish and a dual lnb dish pro dish, possibly a triple lnb dish pro dish would be needed for HDTV reception.

Considering his current equipment, Dish may actually offer a free upgrade.

Yeah, he’s not going to go for a complete upgrade, he thinks the receivers he has work just fine... been there, gave up on that argument. I thought if I could slip in a 612 which operates similarly to the 512 he’d be willing to accept that. But, since it requires a dish upgrade, I reconsider. Thanks for the info! Not the answer I wanted but such is life...

He wants something new, HD, but he doesn't want to change anything. Maybe he should have not gotten the new TV.

You can possibly get Dish to activate new 612's, but you'd have to call Dish on this one. I know one of my co-workers needed a 612 to install on an upgrade last week, so apparently they're still doing it. I mean, have you called Dish yet about it?

The 512 is not part of the ViP series. I’m surprised:
1. It’s still working.
2. Dish hasn’t forced an upgrade already.

I would not go with a ViP612, not even if you had one NIB. It’s old and can’t be very reliable. I second the Wally recommendation. Should not be too hard of a transition. Those may be famous last words.

I’d also recommend the EHD from day one.

Good unit. But many years old.

He'd be more current, for sure and save money on DVR fees

I vote for the 612. I had two of these which worked quite well for many years. It's menu system is much like the 512. Hopper/Wally equipment are much newer as stated. But what a crock that CUI is! Ugh. I wouldn't recommend that to a young person.

Look. The whole deal is dead in the water. There are changes needed at the dish which is above my pay grade and requires an installer appointment. Right? So, it’s his account. I’m not getting all that done without him knowing. So, if I can’t swap a 512 with a 612, story’s over. Thanks to all that tried to actually help.

Yet you left out the part where I said ‘I was considering getting him a 612”. Never once said anything about him considering anything beyond the new TV he bought. Butt out, you haven’t been any help, just rude.

I don't know but if was my father, he would be getting the best latest equipment. But that would be my father.

I love when people fly off the handle because they didn't get the answer they wanted. The 512's are obsolete. At some point, probably soon Dish is going to call and tell you that you're getting an upgrade and pretty soon that upgrade will be a Hopper system or 2 Wallys. You can do it now by calling Dish and telling them one of the receivers won't power up, which will trigger a FREE upgrade to 612's - including the dish - and give your Dad some sweet HD TV or you can wait and get stuck paying more for a Hopper system. Those are your choices or you can keep pops stuck in the stone ages watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in 480P on his new TV
