Free. :). They want to keep you as a customer and they don’t want to spend a lot of money to upgrade you to a newer Hopper if they don’t have to.

And let’s face it many people love their shoppers and Hopper 2’s but they are slow. This solves that problem. :)

I hope they make it standard on all new HWS installs.

I am down 100 pounds to 214. Still have about 40 to go. I think I still look fat lol.

I stopped drinking soda and only drink water. I have also stopped eating to finish everything on my plate and now just eat until I start feeling full.

I feel better than I have in a long time.

Congratulations! What have you been doing? Just a diet?

I’ve been dieting myself, lost about 40lbs, been going to a personal trainer too, so there’s been quite a bit of work involved in it, LOL

You look good, keep up the good work!

Been on the Hopper 1 since 2012. Ever since the upgrade to the modern UI, my wife has been all over me about the slow performance, especially when it gets stuck in fast forward on a show on the DVR. She will be excited to say the least. How do we order one?

Great coverage and information Scott! I miss the old days when this stuff was reallly happening at CES. You and your friends were there to cover it. All makes me re-energized about Dish!
(If you hear anything new about Smart Box, let me know or grab some info).

Safe Travels!

Erik and Charlie take the stage.

First question to Charlie from Erik... Ketchup or Mustard...

Ketchup says Charlie...

A video is shown with people asking Charlie Questions. Charlie says he hopes to get to some of those answers later.

Leadership question from Erik to Charlie - He wants his thoughts on this team at times like this.
Charlie says its tough, they try teaching at DISH to be a good leader and to lead by example. He says it will take a lot of leadership to build the first stand alone 5 G network.

How is the industry shaking out in the market. Charlie says DISH is going up and DIRECTV is going down. Satellite is the core product and is not going away. They will continue making the experience better for the customer. Charlie says their subscriber count should be going up. He says there is not= other company that lets you take your TV everywhere, no company that lets you take HD on an outdoor automated dish...

With Sling and OTT we are early in the innings so somethings will have to shake out, and he hopes they are still standing at the end. Sling is important with their wireless future as the programming will come from the cloud.

Does it make sense for the two satellite assets to go together. He thinks consolidations would be good.

Now on to wireless, Erik wants to get an update from Charlie. He starts with the spectrum that DISH has.

Charlie explains the graph shown behind him, where 600 MHZ goes further than 2.0 ghz. For the rural areas 600 MHz is better, for cities 2 ghz is better.

Hows the buildout going? And Charlie says It is going. It is going about as expected however they made some mistakes which they learned from, but they will be ready in 303 days as mandated by the FCC. There will be a narrow band IoT network and there will be products for it, however its not going to be robust, the robust network will come with 5G.

How does DISH's IoT networks compare to other announced other IoT networks. He says the companies that complained about DISH doing an IoT Network are now making their own IoT network. Other have had an advantage as they have towers already.

Charlie then tells the story how he started and the history of DISH. Talks how Digital and compression changed the game.

He talk 5G and why its better than 4G. He says 5G specs are still a year away. No one can do Real 5G yet as there is no spec.

What makes the DISH Wireless Network. The answer is they are stuck with 30 years of latency. With current cell tech the processing is done below the cell tower, with DISH 5G that processing will be done by the cloud. It allows the network to be changed dynamically. DISH will use MIMO antennas which the current cell phone companies dont do currently. Charlie says they have no customers so they can built it then turn it on,

Charlie talks about Virtualized Networking, and says DISH will use that technology which other carriers haven't done. By virtualizing things it will cost less to operate.

He talks about slicing, which will allow them to break up the network and rent it to others land run it like it is their own.

DISH will be one of the biggest customer of their own product, but many companies will want their own slice of the DISH Wireless Network.

Charlie makes fun of AT&T's 5Ge and said its not real 5G.

Does the architecture offer more than what we are currently using. He says that data is a perishable asset, and if you dont use it, its gone and is lost revenue.

He talks about a company called Tarana and how DISH has invested in them. He said they use Near Line of Site and Interference cancelation.

He then talks about ATSC 3.0 , he says that it will be great for mobile video.

Charlie then tells Retailer to prepare for the future. Retailers will hav more tools for their tool belt. The next step is connecting the home. You will be able to sell them a phone, provide them smart home service and installation. Start offering smart home service.

Is there a race to 5G, Charlie says there are 2 races going on, one from Marketing (such as AT&T with their phones 5Ge). Charlie wants to market it as 11G (gets big laughs). And the second part is national security. Only China has announced a stand alone 5G Network. Charlie says he wants to beat China in the race. He wants to use American products and software.

DISH with their sensors can effect climate change. He says we can even save cows. (Gets loud applause)

DISH Wireless is aiming to connect all people, places, and things and had the power to change lives, and the world.

Erik wraps things up and thanks Charlie for his mentorship. He started with DISH in 1995 and is now CEO.

With that they wrap up and walk off stage... cue the house lights!

Photos coming up!

I said it before and I'll say it again Dish
will be the last company standing. DirecTV may fade away but all those customers that refuse to move to the IP based direct will go to Dish and since he mentioned consolidation is ok don't be surprised if they try to buy the D* satellite business eventually. Remember there is still a segment of the population that depends on or absolutely must have pay TV
