Every thing was fine with my 2010 LG hdtv until a year or so ago when the image suddenly expanded horizontally so that about 10 % of each side of the picture became obscured. I tried changing the aspect ratio settings without success. So I figured the tv was too old and bought a new 49 inch Samsung Qled tv thinking that would solve the problem. It didn't. I discovered this forum and learned how to set up the Dish satellite receiver as:
Analog type: Off Air, tv type: 1080i, Aspect Ratio: 16 x 9. I thought this would do it but now both the horizontal and vertical portions of the screen were cut off. The next day when we turned the tv on everything was normal and I thought "problem solved"! I was happy. Today when turned on the problem had returned. I am hoping someone can help me solve this problem.

If you have a Hopper, or a VIP receiver, with a 20.x/21.x/40 remote, hit the star key until it goes to normal. On a 52/54 remote, hit options/#6 and do the same thing.
Also, make sure the TV resolution is set to Full or Wide

Also, with a hopper, you can adjust the screen placement. Press the home button, go into settings, then into tv settings. At the bottom left, go to adjust screen. There you can adjust the picture so it fills(and not over fills) the screen.

That only adjusts the dish graphic images. (Guide, menus, etc) not the programming.

Thank you for the advice. I am confident getting a hopper will solve the problem. I am curious though why the problem spontaneously comes and goes. Any thoughts on this? Perhaps all it needs is a good wack just as Onslow does to turn his aging tv on and off on the British tv comedy "Keeping up Appearances".

Do you see the problem on all channels, or just certain ones? It could be a problem from the station or Dish's receive gear for that channel.
Is there anyone living in the house with you? My family will often "blow up" a show to avoid black bars (left/right or top/bottom), but when I watch a "normal" channel, part of the content is chopped off.

You really need to check the format as HipKat mentions.

This happens on all channels sourced by the satellite receiver. when the signal comes from the internet via wifi there is no display problem.
There are only 2 of us and I am positive she is not changing anything except channels and volume.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hipcat and Sam suggest checking the format. Not sure what you mean by "format" unless it is aspect ratio you are referring to and I made sure it was set to 16x9.

receiver is VIP722. That star button is a great thing to know about. I tried all the possibilities and none of them produced a satisfactory screen, not even "normal"

Depending on your remote right next (above) the volume control is the "page" buttons and that also changes the aspect ratio. Top one changes HD bottom one changes SD. I wish I was as confident as you a Hopper will fix the problem.
There are a very few channels but usually from OTA, but there can be exceptions, where the picture does stretch wider than the screen no matter the settings. But certainly not anywhere near all channels.

It could be a setting on the TV itself for that particular input.
That would be my thought, except according to the OP, this has happened on two different TVs.

OP, how do you have the receiver hooked up to the TV? HDMI, Composite (yellow, red, white), or component (red, green, blue)? I'm thinking maybe you're using the SD output of the receiver instead of the HD and the TV is automatically stretching the video.

I tried those buttons but nothing happened. I'm not sure about meaning of HD and SD. is HD horizontal dimension?

The top page button controls the size of the picture for HD channels. The bottom one for SD channels. Not all channels can have their size changed with the Dish receiver settings.

the connection from receiver to tv goes through a Denon tuner via HDMI cables. I tried connecting without the tuner but the problem remained.
