Is Dish heading towards dropping locals?

You will only receive it if you live in the 9 DMAs that it support it. I don't think you can record any of the channels. It is a live streaming service.
No recording. It a streaming app like the other Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, etc. apps on the Hopper. As Bobby said, you need to be in one of the nine available DMA's to use it. I tried it when I was using a service address in the Washington, DC DMA and it works well enough, but there are no sub-channels available.
Then go ahead a try it out and report what you see...I'm in the Washington D.C. DMA.
I got the email from Dish about the free local antenna. Assumed it would be one of those squares that sticks on the window. Maybe it is, but they wanted to send a technician out on Sunday which is fine.
They told me no PTAT which is ok because I watch very little local tv (only Colbert, Orville, and NFL football) and never cared much about PTAT. I forgot to ask the guy on the phone if it will work with the Hopper 3, if the guide data will be available, if I will get PBS, and how many local channels can record at the same time.
I’m not too worried about this whole thing because no one is forcing me to drop Dish locals if I’m not satisfied. Although if this OTA antenna works well then I’ll gladly reduce the bill by $12.
I’m in the middle of Phoenix with a direct line to South Mountain so the yellow box channels should all come in.

You will need the two tuner OTA dongle for your Hopper 3, it will probably be part of your installation. It has two tuners so you can only record two at any time. You will have guide data for most your main stations but you may not get data for many sub channels.
At least you can still turn on autohop...
By the way, I discovered to my surprise that when I turned that on, it retroactively enabled it on all 2nd season episodes of The Orville, including those I had previously recorded.

Which of the 9 DMA's has the dot subs on Locast, Juan? I've looked at all of them using a fake GPS app, and don't recall seeing any, but that may have changed. I do recall a couple of channel sharing stations though, like WTTG and WDCA in the Washington, DC DMA. WTTG identifies as virtual channel 5 and WDCA identifies as virtual channel 20, but both share RF channel 36.
It’s no where as good as my 1 TB TiVo Bolt! I never even record anything off my Dish Dual OTA Tuner. I mainly use it for PIP when I’m on my Hopper 3 input. I guess I also have it in case I ever need one or two extra tuners to record, but it hasn’t happened yet.
Ok, thanks... I just took a look, and I actually see 5 there now including WNET-2, a PBS sub.
The locast app on DISH Hopper allows certain locales to get local TV over internet and from what I’m assuming is that these stations will be able to be recorded on our DVR

Neither the Locast or any of the other streaming apps are supported by the Hopper DVR.
From what I'm told it's if you're in one of the markets then you can watch the Locast channels but you can't record them.
Possibly, but not necessarily. IF Dish does use OTA, they'll have scouted out a pretty sound location, probably with at least a small tower to put the antenna up high. Heck, I just have an attic mount antenna and my locals never go out in the rain.
