HOPPER SNAP

Hopper Snaps were mailed to folks this afternoon.

I went to the post office and tried mailing them last night, however their kiosk was out of order.

To those that are getting them... please forgive me I spelled SatelliteGuys wrong in the letters I enclosed with them. :D (and a very important word too!) :D I didn't notice until I was sitting here and looked down and saw a copy of the letter I sent. WHOOPS! :D

I would say this letter with misspellings is like PGP encryption for emails: It's Scott's "Private Key" that verifies the letter is really from him!

Well, I just finally installed my first one on a hopper sling, with a Joey 2, and Wi-Fi Joey. I have to tell you that I am highly impressed. The program guide on the hopper was faster than a hopper three. It literally does “snap” when you hit the page up button. Yes, I said faster than a hopper three’s program guide. The Joey 2, which was in the garage, far from the Hopper, was just slightly slower than a Joey three. I couldn’t believe how much faster it was then they normally are. And the Wi-Fi was also faster than mine are at home. You guys that are waiting for them to show up in the mail are in for a real treat. I would just advise that your hoppers have the newest software on them

Now to find out if Dish is going to charge the rest of us that have Hopper2's or give to it to us when we ask for them when they become available.

The plan was (at Team Summit) to give it to anyone who wanted one. Don't know if those plans have changed, but that was the plan.

Update. I just did a hopper 1 that was behind on software versions. So I updated the software while I set them up for arc swap from Western Eastern and when the software update was done I installed the snap, powered it up and ran a check switch and when it was done I got a pop-up saying that the hopper snap was ready for use. It was just as fast as the one I did this morning on the hopper 2. If this is Dish’s way of correcting a GUI error, they hit it out of the park

Now if Dish would only decide to share this wonderfulness with the rest of us with Hopper 1s and 2's. Since they've begun including the Snap module in new installs, it would seem that testing is about ended.

My Snap arrived today (Thanks, Scott!), and after making sure the H2 in our RV had updated to U715, I installed it. There are no directions with it beyond the graphic on the unit indicating that the upper USB slot must be used, and none are needed. The upper slot requirement appears to be just a matter of clearance though. After turning on the H2, a check of the diags page showed that the Snap was recognized and active. Bringing up the EPG, the difference was clear that it really does "snap" now. Below is a brief before and after video that makes the difference pretty obvious. Excuse the shakiness, the TV is in an awkward spot to hold the camera steady while pushing buttons on the remote.

I participate in a USPS program that gives mea daily update of items to be delivered. I see from today's update that I will be receiving a package tomorrow sent from the far off and exotic land of Newington, CT. I assume that is a Hopper SNAP.

As luck would have it I will be working the local polls fro 16 hours on Tuesday. Expect a report on the SNAP later in the week. Unless of course it turns out that someone else in Newington is sending me somehting.

Got back from my kid's softball tournament today. Still running around with the kids. As soon as I'm just relaxing in the house, I'm going install the snap into my Hopper 1. If I fall off the face of earth, please call me out here or PM me for updates. In softball season, along with preparing to run my school's summer program, I do get busy and stop posting here. Then there's my regular involvement in Bob's Pit. So, I know that I appear and disappear in the Dish forum. I apologize in advance.

Initial installation and quick tests complete.

I originally was gormless and just connected the Snap. I realized that when moving my router a couple months ago, I disconnected my Hopper from the internet. So, I reconnected that. I kept looking for any info on the Hopper that stated it was connected. When I couldn't find that, I looked at NYDutch's post and realized that my software wasn't updated. I disconnected the Snap and ran a software update. I apologize, as I didn't check the latest software version for the Hopper 1. After the update, I reconnected the Snap. It takes about a minute to 90 seconds for the Hopper 1 to recognize that Snap is connected and indicate so. After so, the Hopper will soft power off (go to sleep) and power back up. Just as NYDutch stated, go into diagnostics and the info will indicate that Snap is present and connected.

Just checking really quick. I thought that the lag between changing channels still existed. I found it to be similar at first to without the snap. But, I took my daughter into the pool for a while. When I came back, I was showing the difference to my wife and she stated that it was much faster. She watches the TV more than me, so I am going with what she said.

No denying that the guide is back to the speed it had with the Legacy UI. Pressing the page up and page down buttons is much more refreshing with the Snap. Again, my wife was elated to see that.

I didn't test On Demand programming yet. But, I did test Prime Time Anytime recordings with both an episode of The Simpsons and an episode of The Goldbergs. In the Boston DMA, FOX, CBS, and NBC have no autohop, as they are O&O stations. But ABC has it starting with next day viewing, as this is the current agreement between Hearst owned stations and Dish. We use autohop for our ABC viewing, but for today's test, I chose not to use it.

Without the Snap, there has been rapid issues with the DVR getting stuck rewinding and fast forwarding programs. My wife has wanted to break our Hopper since the software update to the current UI. This especially happened when trying to fast forward with five minutes or less at the end of program. I tried teaching her the 10 second skip to no avail. On these programs, the issue has shown to only remain when fast forwarding or rewinding at 300x speed. When doing so at 15x or 60x speed, the issue is resolved and the program plays immediately when pressing the play button.

When I went outside, I put on music from SiriusXM for the dog. After returning, I tested the fast forward and rewind functions and the issue with 300x speed isn't present on live programming. That appears to be limited to recordings on the DVR.

That's all I have for now. I'll keep you all updated as I have more time to be lazy and watch TV.

Addition

I only tested the Hopper with the Snap connected. I haven't tested the Joey or any live programming via the OTA module. The OTA module and the Snap both work fine being connected to the Hopper.
