I just spent the last 20 minutes trying to have my wife's name removed from the account. she died last year and thought it would be no problem...boy was I wrong. they want a death certificate or all the info on it before they will do anything. they want SS numbers also. this is way out of line. nothing is changing as far as payment is concerned. I also wanted to add my daughters name so she could handle any problems that might happen. but they want her SS too. I have had dish for 20yrs they are going to loose me over this. I started a new 2 yr commitment last year it just might be worth canceling.everything on Dish i can get streaming now. Used to tell everybody how great they were..NOT anymore.....Really disappointed.....

This seems reasonable to me. When my dad was unable to live alone and went to live with my sister, I had to present a medical letter from the doctor proving it. We were then able to cancel dad’s account without penalty since my sister already had a dish account. This is done to prevent account stacking.

If you think Dish is bad you should deal with the Banks. When my dad died we had all sorts of problems.
1) Athene had the correct amount of the IRA but considered all taxable. We had proof that only 38% was taxable but they refused to look at our statements. After 2 months and many phone calls they finally agreed to research the deposits. Their final result agreed with us.
2) PNC Bank did not want to talk to us. They claimed they only talk to lawyers. We went to the local PNC bank where my dad had his account. We had turned in an original death certificate to them when dad died. The local branch manager had emailed a scanned copy of the death certificate to the corporate office. He set up a conference call with us and the corporate office guy who would not talk to us. He asked why they were not releasing the money. The corporate guy said they had no death certificate. Th local branch manager said I emailed you the death certificate on such and such a date and you opened the email. There was a long pause. Then the corporate guy said that the death certificate was upside down. The local branch manager said Are you capable of rotating the sheet. Needless to say we then got the money.
3) Citizen’s Bank also claimed that we needed a lawyer. We had already gotten an EIN from the IRS but they would not talk to us. Once again the local branch was reasonable and were able to overrule the stupidity of the corporate people.
4) Even though everything was in an estate with witnessed wills that spelled everything out and all 4 of us kids were 100% agreed on everything, they wanted each of us to have our own lawyer plus a lawyer in Geauga County to break the Trust. That is not necessary. We will need 1 lawyer to break the Trust when we get ready to sell the House.

I wouldn’t give them anything! I would cancel and go elsewhere.....

DISH is a big boy and can answer for itself, so I'm not defending them. However, I certainly can understand their precautionary steps. People everyday get divorced, have pissing matches, etc. and try to do underhanded things to their spouse or ex. DISH is just guarding against someone coming back later and saying they didn't authorize such an account change, etc. I know what it's like to lose a spouse, so I certainly can sympathize with you about all the hassle.

With regard to SS number, this has gotten completely out of hand in this country. The SS Administration says "don't give it out to anyone", yet you can't get anything done nowadays without it. From medical care to insurance and beyond, they all want your SS#. If you question them about why they need it, they treat you like a trouble maker.

I ran into the same type thing when I moved out of my house and my son moved in. He just took over my cable account. Time Warner put us through hoops. It would have been easier if I had just gone down and turned in the equipment and let him start over with a new account.

When you have two different names on an account each person named is responsible for that account. In order to remove a person from the account you have to show why that is so. In this case one of the parties is dead. DISH is simply trying to cover its responsibility accurately. Let's say that Party A gets divorced from party B. Party B moves out and no longer wants to be responsible for paying Party A's bill. DISH would ask for proof of divorce papers. There is no difference in either case.

My dad passed away last year. His name was on all of the accounts. My mom told me you wouldn't believe the hoops she had to go through to get his name off of the accounts. Banking we expected. We did not expect:
* Utilities
* Cable
* Rewards

Everyone wanted a new copy of the death certificate, and they all had to be original (every copy costs $$).

That’s why it’s a good idea to get multiple copies. At least 5-6. Some accounts require it. Used to be some only required an obituary. Although those days are probably gone.

Unfortunately with all the fraud these days companies need to have policies like this in place to secure accounts and customer privacy.

This is pretty normal. They have to prove that the person in question is just not dropping their partner from the contract on "Here-Say". I had to go through this quite a years ago too. They all demand a copy of the Death Certificate. I had to go through this to change bank accounts, and the to the state for the ownership of our home.

When I retired, my employer paid me and my wife a certain amount (equal amounts) each year to help on insurance man medical cost. When she died in 2017, I had to send them an original death certificate just to stop them from depositing her part of the money in our account. We both had the same account and it was in my name because I was the employee. They did not want a copy of the original certificate.

I am the only one on my Dish account. Will the make me send them my death certificate?lol

My father died in 1996, but was from a small town. Me and my two sisters were walking into the little courthouse to do those things you need to do. As we were walking in my sister says, "Oh Lord....I forgot the death certificate!". And a voice from back in the office said, "Don't worry about it, honey, we know he's dead".

The rest of the world was not so understanding, but that sure helped at a very bad time.

No, but I bet they make whoever goes to cancel your account send in your death certificate.

5-6? Try 10-20. And there are "long form" and "short form" versions. Some businesses accept the short form and others insist on the long form.
