SatelliteGuys will be OFFLINE this Saturday Morning (July 20th) and will remain offline for a few hours for a system update.

Why is this happening?

Well our current operating system is out of date and is no longer being updated. Certain back end software we need to operate the forum are old and out of date, such as PHP and SQL. Because the software is out of date there could be security holes, and we certainly don't want that.

We will be wiping out the server and will be loading the latest and greatest version of the OS on the server.

Of course all info will be backed up and reloaded.

This work is expected to take some time, so we may be offline for a number of hours on Saturday... but don't worry we will be back and better than ever. :)

Thanks for being SatelliteGuys!

Actually I won't be around (or doing it) I will be doing a live radio broadcast at our towns annual celebration.

To be honest I would rather be doing the work on the server... inside in the AC... as its supposed to feel like 110 degrees here on Saturday! :D

So- what features are we going to lose? You referred to that earlier.

Sent from my iPhone using SatelliteGuys App. For now.

It didn't sound like an update to Xenforo, just the underlying OS, right?

This is probably just a precursor to updating Xenforo down the road...

Correct.
Xenforo 1.x is at end of life. It is not being updated anymore nor are any security updates being issued.

In addition working on something where some programmers may be involved, so if they tinker with the software I would rather them working on the new software. In addition Tapatalk is about to dump support for XenForo 1.x.

There are a bunch of other reasons as well, but those are the big ones off the top of my head.

Yeah I hate change and wish we could keep what we have, but we need to because we have to.

Good luck! I upgraded one of my win 7 computers and a basic 2 hour job is taking me 2+ weeks. But that's because I don't know what I am doing. I believed it when I was told follow these instructions and it will work fine. Well it didn't. The one good thing is my computers are really secure now. Nobody can see they exist, not even me on the LAN. Well, I did get each of them to work as a media server.

Do you have a definite start time, Scott? Hopefully people trying the site will get a nice "down for scheduled maintenance" instead of a 404.

No start time... its whenever Anthony gets up and starts working on it.

People will not get a 404 most of the time. Instead they will just get nothing. No server response at all.

(Wait I take that back, they will get a message from the firewall saying the server is not responding)

Hopefully with this update that won't happen anymore. (its when the system is dumping and archiving the database) as part of the backup.

We are back online. The system was backed up which took forever. However for some reason our DRAC is not allowing the loading of an ISO to reload the server with the new OS.

So the update was not completed.

It appears that Anthony will have to go to our co location facility and do the update, and that won't be today.

When I know more I will let you know more. :)
