So I called DIRECTV, and I asked for Retentions department, and they forwarded me to the VIP department, after I rejected a $30 off a month for 12 months, ended up with $64 off for 12 months, and NFL ST Max Free for 2019, also got HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, Sports free for 3 months. Just required a 12 month agreement, don't mind the agreement, wasn't going anywhere, even though my local ABC is part of the Nexstar issue.

Jeez, congratulations. I just tried to get my $35.00 per month discount re-instated and discussed pricing for NFLST. Talked to 3 different people (all who had the same middle eastern accent). I was nice, pleasant and calm, but was told there were no discounts at this time.

I know some have different thoughts on this, but I'm thinking if a company is losing hundreds of thousands of customers, they discount that product. Not AT&T.

Although some are getting a discount, many are not. AT&T has actually admitted out loud during investor calls and interviews with the media they are interesting in retaining only DirecTV customers who contribute to their bottom line. They are not as interested in subscriber numbers just for numbers sake, especially with DirecTV. With the other platforms they are about to release, the DirecTV brand will be their 'top tier' or 'elite' brand - high paying and loyal subscribers.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with this, I'm just repeating their business strategy moving forward. Time will tell if this will work for them.

Yes, they are trying to get rid of those that are on the very lowest tiers such as the Family or the Select packages I suppose. I'm guessing those packages are losing them money.
Those are the packages you generally can't order to start a subscription. But you Can drop to when needed.

Look at what Verizon is doing with their FiOS TV product. They just raised the equipment/service fee for DVR. It's now something like $24/mo, just for DVR -- that's on top of whatever you pay for your actual programming. But at the same time, they've also just begun distributing YouTube TV (a live streaming cable TV service) as an option to be bundled in with FiOS internet (as well as with Verizon Wireless and Verizon 5G Home). YouTube TV costs a flat $50/mo with unlimited cloud DVR (and a 9-month expiration on recordings). It serves up to 3 simultaneous viewers across whatever devices you prefer and has advanced features like individual user profiles and smart auto-extended DVR recordings (for overtime sports, etc.) that traditional services like FiOS TV don't have at all.

What is Verizon doing here? I think they've decided that their traditional "premium" TV service, FiOS TV, won't be around all that much longer. I give it another 2-3 years.

In the meantime, they're going to milk those who stay on it with higher fees. Some will respond by switching to YouTube TV (for which I'm sure Verizon receives a little sales commission from Google) while others are too rich, lazy or stubborn to switch, so they'll stick with FiOS TV until the prices go higher still. At some point, there will be so few subs left on FiOS TV that Verizon will be free to just shut it down and not have to fool with negotiating cable network carriage contracts, installing, supporting and swapping out TV hardware, and the other distractions of running their own cable TV business. Instead, they'll have just outsourced all that to Google's YouTube TV (and whatever other OTT services that their broadband customers choose on their own).

I don't think the situation with DirecTV vs. AT&T TV is exactly the same but it's fairly similar.

I'm usually in that high pricing, plus been with them since 2006, I also sub to NBA LP and NHL CI each year. I had been out of contract for the past 2 years, have no reason to leave, yeah my local ABC is gone, but I only watched it for NBA and NCAAF, and I have access to WatchESPN, so I can stream whatever I may miss. Hopefully no issues with FOX or CBS to mess with any local 49ers game, not that I get many, if any, being in NY.

Sounds to me like its the same type of thing Att did ... they figure if they jump in and start making money with that bundle, the better off they are. Before all option have been taken.

Through a chat rep telling me I was getting the 2019 NFLST for free, I held them to that and got it for free this year, after having to jump through many hoops..they don't make it easy anymore!

Anyone here have any opinion on the Sunday Ticket U (Student version)? Is it worth it? The price is right but not sure what the downside is to it.

Use it 2 years now. Love it. Really no downside, unless you connection stinks.

With nflsundayticket.tv your only aloud 1 log in at a time

No STBs

So if you have multiple tvs it's no good .

If you only use 1 tv/laptop then you should be ok

Damn, I just called to see about discounts and wound up setting up a cancel date for about 2 weeks away. Have to wait and see if I get any phone calls to keep me, but I'm not counting on it after reading this thread. It's all good though, I can try out streaming options for a while.

Maybe ask for retentions, then ask them to speak to the VIP department, they can do better than retentions as far as discounts, that's what I did, I didn't have any ideas of canceling, but they hooked me up, helps to be a long term customer, never miss a payment, etc....
